Ok, here my situation, several months ago, I purchased an '89 iroc stripped rolling chassis, with just a bill of sale. I bought it because it had rust free doors and 1/4 panels. My '85 iroc is rotting bad and i HAD planned on cutting panels from the roller. Anyways, the 85 is so bad, the chssis is not saveable anymore. So now i'm looking into swapping everything from the 85 to the 89.

The story of the 89 appears to be this.... in or around 1998/1999 it was brought to a shop in south jersey. It had remained there for approximately 2 years with the female owner never coming back. At that point, another person tried purchasing the car from the shop but they wouldnt sell it. A few months after that, the wheels were stolen off the car and the gfx were damaged. after see the car wheel-less, the same person tried to buy it once again from the shop. At this point the shop wanted it gone and sold the car to them just to get back storage fees for the approx 2.5 years. The car then sat in PA from about 2002-2005. Those people then lost their storage space and had to sell it. Thats when i bought it, and I just have a bill off sale.

While going through the car I found several insurance documents and bank papers with a womens name and town, Cherry hill NJ. Now first off, i cant use a title service, the car is too new, so thats out. DMV claims the car is out of the system after 5-6 years of not being registered so they are no help either. I could swap the 85 VIN over.. but i wont do that, so dont bring it up. I was thinking of just trying to track down that women and sending her a letter or such asking if i send a form for her to sign and pay the fees, will she get a duplicate title and sign it over to me. IMO thats the best/ easiest way.

From past experiences, i know the previous owners may want the car back now that it resurfaced, but its a stripped shell, so im not really concerned, if they want it back, they can have it, just pay me my storage fees for the past year, lol. Has anyone ever gone though a process like this and have any advice or suggestions?

the only problem with finding the woman and having her get a title to sign ove is that since the car is in her name she would be within her rights to just take it back. you would need to have some sort of bill ready for her if she does want it back, some amount for towing plus storage fees.
i know around here it is pretty normal for storage fees to be in the 50-75 per day range, so you could get away with that since i would doubt she is prepared to fork over all that money for whatever is left of the car.

if its all stripped, why do you want to title it?

if it was listed as stolen you as the last person having it will be on the hook
nice idea but it could open a can of worms -- have had all kinds of storys about older harleys same thing -- if theirs a loan not been paid or it was reported stolen you are getting a bill and or handcufs

go to dmv in trenton tell them you need to title this car they are going to ask you for a rubbing of the vin # I/e a peice of paper your take a pencil and rub over the vin tag then they will give you a set of papers and you need to fill them out send them back and youll have a title withing a few weeks!

with the VIN# being under glass there is an extra form you will need and you will have to supply a picture of the vin plate. i forget what they call the form, basically it is you promising that the vin is actually the one from the car you are trying to title.
i had to do that with the 71 grand prix i used to have
