I'm thinking about getting the SLP 3.73. I'm sure someone in here has it, and was there anything else you needed to buy?

i didnt buy one but i would say that you need an installation kit to go with those gears! they have a couple different ones- like a basic install kit and then a deluxe one

It depends on what ratio you are going from. If you have 3.08 or numericaly lower ratio i believe you have a 2 series carrier if you have 3.23 or numerical higher you should have a 3 series carrier. Check the RPO codes if you are uncertian if your current ratio. You need to know this prior to ordering gears, this way you will know which 3.73's to order, those for a 2 series carrier or a 3 series.
I would suggest searching on-line for some good prces on Motive gears, they are moderatly priced and run rather quiet with minimal whine compaired to say Richmonds, Genuine GM gears IMO are the best (GM buys from AAM American Axle Company) you can find these gears at the dealer for a very high price or some places on line. Ebay is a good place to look for new and used GM OEM AAM gear sets. There is nothing wrong with buying a used set but once a gear set is used it gets a pattern worn in them, it is quite difficult to set them up exactly how they formerly meshed, this could result in some whine.
As for what else you need, you will probably want to invest in the master install kit and just replace all the bearings seals and races, your doing this job once you may as well get all the new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, axle seals, pinion seal. the master kit should also contain gear marking compound, crush collar, ring gear bolts, carrier shims, pinion shims and loctite. IMO a worthwhile investment. You also have to consider reclibrating the spedo, depending on what year car you have it can be done through nylon spedo gears on 3rd gens to having the PCM recalibrated on 4th gens

Strange I thought Motive Gears made the GM OEM gears
And the difference in price between regular Motive gears and the GM Motive gears was because GM required a higher quality Ring & Pinion that didnt require a break in period after the install...They wanted a install and go Gear..
Vs the Standard Performance Motive gears that are cheaper and have a Bore coating on the Ring & Pinion from Manufacturing that require a break in after the install

I hear a lot of things like that, maybe Gm does outsource to Motive, another member tells me that some gears are manufactured by Richmond. As far as I know GM buys all their axles from American Axle Manufacturing so I would imagine AAM still uses their own gears. Remember that a majority of these gear sets find their way into trucks, vans, years ago in grandmas buick. Its funny how the people who are passionate about GM products are gear heads who probably dont care if their NOS T/A with 550hp has gear whine but thats probably why most aftermarket gear sets can be set up with 0.006 to 0.012 backlash. I was told that OEM gears are manufactred to higher standards to mesh more precisely with a 0.002 backlash to run as quiet as possible because GM was concerned about giving that 1986 oldsmobile cuttlass a perfictly quiet ride so that customers were not coming back and complaining about a whine which would have to be warrentied at cost to the company every time. I dunno how true all of that is but i think it sounds lodgical

I'm well aware of who AAM is thanks
And i have seen an Old Gm gear box with American Axle on it
But i know Motive is the supplier now
You may be right about the backlash requirements i don't know
But the Bore coating with the standard Motive gears needing a break in Vs the GM Motive gears not having the bore coating and not requiring a break in is 100% correct.
The difference between GM Motives and Motives is the Gm Motives Cost 20 bucks more because of that fact..
Same as with the part #'s for the gears are Motive part numbers
A set of 3:73 Gm gears will be MGM75373 which stands for Motive GM 7.5 rear 3:73 gears.. then you would have the Gm part# to
And the standard Motive gears would be MOT75373
I have 2 friends of mine that work at the Corvette Paramedic's up in Trenton..
I get a discount on gears through them and those are what they supply and they only use GM gears

Im sorry I did not realize you "were well aware of who AAM was" my ESP comes in a little fuzzy at times. I wasnt looking to offend anyone I was just giving as much information as I know incase others would like to learn a bit. I thought that was the point of these blogs. I do not have first hand experiance cutting or selling gears for either company so obvioulsy nothing I say is law but when I worked for GM some time ago whenever we got in a box of ring and pinion sets they were in GM brown boxes and stamped with the AAM logo like your saying, maybe in the last 8-10 years motive got the contract through AAM to manufacture their gears I dont know and I said it could be possible. But what you say about the boring of pinion gears that i did not know, thats interesting and news to me. good info.
increase the peace
