Weiand 142?

Hello, I am thinking about building a 350 sbc, probably 350-400 hp. And drop a supercharger on it. Trying to keep this as budget as possible as I still have to do the rest of my drivetrain and suspension eventually.

Anyway, I want to drop a supercharger on the 350, for size and cost the weiand 142 seems to be the one. Anyone have any experience with it? I have heard its great for the price, or its a waste and I should start with the 177. Can anyone say anything about either of them?

Oh and I'll probably be running 8 - 8.25:1 CR and use less then 10 psi.

350-400hp with or without the blower? You certainly don't need a blower to reach that level...

the weiand blowers are junk anymore. since holley took them over a few years ago the fit and finish and durability have gone to hell.
look into a blower drive services supercharger. it does cost a good bit more, but it will stay together and make the power you want for a good long time.

Single quad, think dual would be overkill at this point.
And this will be my first venture into supercharging, just looking to get into it cheaply for now. Saving the big bucks to supercharge something bigger then a 355 eventually.

I think the weiand blower will outlast how long I will want to use it. Not going to be that many miles put on it probably.

is the bigger future plan for a small block?
if you are going smal block to small block you could get a ball bearing BDS 6-71 and a single carb top. wen it is time for the upgraded motor, just change the top and the puley and you are good to go.
no reason to spend the money twice buying crap parts you know you are going to outgrow.
i wouldn't count on getting more than 1 season out of a weiand blower.

I have two engines out there with the weiand 142's on them.. well over 2 seasons on both.. Main thing to look out for is internal gear box pressure pushing oil out of the front seal.. Both are on trucks that weigh over 4000lbs and both truck are in the 12's. 142 would be fine with a 350 but if you plan on going to a big block you are talking apples to oranges and would need to change blowers anyway... Build it once and do the big block now.

I dont have the cash to build a big block now. Its not like this engine will go to waste, it will go into my truck, once I get a big block to go in my monte :)

I have to figure out what cam to put into this engine now.
Anyone have a mild 355 with a 142/144 blower that ended up making about 500hp? Curious as to what cam I should use, and what CR would be ok with said cam and my vortec heads.

Your best bet would be to find a builder familiar with the type of setup you are looking to run instead of asking the internet "experts" for their opinions. Have a plan, find out what it will take, allocate the funds, then execute in that order..
