The bolt pattern is 4.5 x 5. What are you going to use the Jeep for? If you're planning on taking it wheeling, then get some good BFG Mud Terrains. Good all around off road tire and not too bad on the street. If you're planning mainly on-road with a once in a great while (Once a year or only in snow) off road trip, then go with BFG All Terrains.
Size is your own preference. If you're not going to lift this thing, stick with what you have as far as tire size. You can go as big as 31 inch tires without the need to worry about backspacing on a stock rim (Although you may experience some rubbing of the fenderwells with bigger meats so plan accordingly), so if you're going aftermarket, just order something comparable.

31's may fit on stock rims, but will probably rub the fenderwells on any type of flexing activity. I'm running the stock 30"x9.50" Goodyears and 15x8's from a 2004 Wrangler on stock suspension and they do not rub, even climbing curbs and snowbanks. Here's a pic of mine -

if you can, pick up the latest issue of Off Road Adventures magazine. there is a 4 page article on XJ build-ups. they go over wheel and tire sizes from stock XJs to 8" lift.
PS - if you're driving on road mostly, don't run BFG MTs. you will be disappointed in the rain and snow (no sipes unless you cut your own). i run 31" BFG ATs on my blazer and they do just fine in all driving situations.

curt brings up a good point. no sipes=crap in the rain. my MT/R's aren't the best in the rain because of that. but in mud, they're pretty damn good.

What kind of "rim place" did you call that they dont know wtf the correct back spacing is for a Jeep Cherokee?

I agree; the ATs are a great all around tire if you're not going to off-road this beast much, although I wheel with someone who runs the ATs off road and I haven't seen her get stuck too often. I run Mud Terrains but I also go off pavement at least once a month. Mine were also siped, so they stick like glue in the rain and snow.

Pro Comp XTerrain's FTW (I think, they officially have not been on the truck yet ) congrats on the purchase, I miss my 92 every day.

Great Choice in a vehicle. For all you Jeep ownersI was a GM and Jeep tech for many years. The XJ is the best ever made in my opinion. I have built every piece of drive train on these vehicles at one time or another. The automatic transmissions are bullitproof as long as the fluid does not go low. If you ever have a question mechanical or electrical fire away.
