how easy is it to change the fuel pump on my 92 camaro rs do i need to drop the rear to get the tank out

Its not a fun job but it can be done without removing the rear

aren't most fuel pumps in the tanks themselves? oh you meant drop the rear my bad i read it as drop the tank.... :p

i tried to take one out of a 88 gta once its tight as hell without takeing the rear out i couldnt move the tank the car was going to the junkyard i ended up getting the sledge hammer and banging it out i need to do this one carefull its i drive my 92 rs daily

Jack it up in the rear, put jack stands under the framerails, then undo the top mount for the two rear shocks. Also undo the panhard rod where it mounts to the unibody. Slowly lower the rear until you have enough room to get to the tank. Then loosen the filler neck where it connects to the side of the car, undo the straps, and lower the tank.

Good topic because I may have to do this as well.

And because I'm a tool, I assume the tank needs to be drained before doing this right? Can't just drop the tank and replace the pump without having an empty tank?

It's far easier to drain the tank first.....gas is heavy.

ive dont it witout taken out the rear i did it in about 40 mins not long at all pritty easy

What gave me the most difficulty was getting the exhaust off because it was all welded together up to the cat. So I had to wrestle it all out.

i can get the exhaust off all i need is time to do it allso it runs good when it wants to the car has a problem with the gas gauge when i step on the gas the gauge says full when i stop at a light it says empty while i have it all apart i might as well change the fuel pump one shot what would happen if i put a tpi fuel pump in

Whats in the RS now? 3.1 or 305 TBI?

You could put a TPI pump in, but really no need to. MPFI and TPI's run around 38-42ish PSI. TBI needs around 14 PSI. The regulator would control it anyways.
