View Full Version : North photo shoot?

Just wanted throw the idea out there for getting some of us Northern folk together to take some pictures of our cars once the warmer weather gets here. I think we tried to do this last year, but nothing ever happened. If anyone has any ideas, knows some good spots, post up and maybe we can get something going.

I'm trying to buy a new Canon Rebel XT but funds are very low right now :-(

I've had a few ideas actually and have been on the look out for some good spots that are suitable for large groups of us. One of my ideas was to have someone drive my pick-up down the highway one late afternoon, and take pictures of the cars passing by and such, I think action pictures would comoe out crazy! I love industrial settings too, modern technology type buildings sound awesome with "modern" muscle, but usually cops will hastle you. Can't forget parking garages, keep on the look out for large ones that are tall, and have good white lighting no yellow stuff. The biggest thing to avoid though is doing burn-outs, it attracts too much attention.

I wrote down a list of potential places at home, that I'll post later.

Yeah, some kind of factory/industrial setting would be cool. Also I was thinking something outdoors, like a lake/woodland setting. I'm not really interested in doing any fast and furious type crap. Just somewhere we have a enough space to park the cars and get some good shoots in. But it would be cool to get some shots of the cars cruising down the road.

I've looked around Paramus and such for a good photo shot area, but haven't had much luck. I'd like to find a building with mirrored windows on the lower level, so you can park the car and see the reflection of it in the background. That would be killer!

I found something close by Bergen, but its not level. For nature stuff I was thinking campgaw by Ramapo, i thought it was really nice up there and when i went on a late Sunday it was pretty much deserted. Also we could do bear mountain again with 7-lakes drive, or we could go up Skyline drive, or even further up rt.23.

Or we could just stand a bunch of mirrors up behind the cars

Campqaw could be a possibility... the more deserted a place the better, and it's not too far north for people that might come from more south or west areas of North NJ. But I do like the idea of 7 lakes/Bear Mountain... guess it all depends on who we get that's interested.

One thing that comes to my mind when bringing out a lot of cars is communication. We'd have to work something out we aren't one big discombobulated mess of cars looking for parking.

Last time we did a big shoot @ Bear mountain we ended up exchanging unfriendly words with people when there wasn't enough parking. We would have to somehow manage this on a Sunday when there are less cars on the road, but Parks are another question.

Its def a good idea, but those rent-a-cops are not car friendly especially if a large group gathers. Even if no one is messing around usually the cops will get called in and break it up.

I would love to get some pics at an airport on a runway, or even at light next to the taxi lights. This will take a bit of calling around though as you can't just roll out to any airport and expect them to let you do this. I think it would be a really sweet setup for pics though.

What does everyone think? Anyone know any connections with an airport?

LS1Hawk
03-21-2007, 12:04 PM
The idea is just to find a nice local spot everyone up North can easily get to where we can park the cars, get good shots in and chill for a bit without worrying about cops, getting yelled at, etc. Something like an airport, while it would make for some cool shots, would probably require clearances and whatnot, and be too much of a hassle.

Still, I beleive it may be worth looking into. I doubt any large airports (Newark for example) would allow this. But you may find a small airport with little to no traffic might allow it. I think it would be at least worth looking into for the fact of what a great photo shot it would make, not to mention it would be a place easier to hang out at vs. a busy highway or something.

I think thats a good idea. Any objections to Lincoln Park airport? Its a pretty tiny grass roots type airport, with a decent runway and taxi area, theres also a park on one side we could all park and hang out if we had to. I wouldn't mind actually calling and asking. One of my all time car picture goals is getting in a hanger.

Lincoln Park airport sounds like a good idea (didn't even know there was an airport there). If it's like what Alex described, then that might actually work. I'm cool with late May. Is an airport (as cool as it sounds) really going to work given hightened security and all?

Has anyone actually called the airport and asked yet?

Not trying to rain on the parade, but I think an airport, however small, is going to be a tough sell. How many cars are we talking? Anyone know? That to me is the key: How many cars.

There is a park near me in Randolph that has a decent amount of parking and a large pond. I believe the pond is still surrounded by sand, but I haven't checked in some time. I photographed my car at this very park last year and it's flat, lots of green grass, and has a decent amount of trees in the background. Not sure exactly what you dudes are after, but a natural setting to me is more my style versus the runway of an airport.

I also realize I hardly post here anymore, so my suggestion justifiably has little weight (as it should) and I know depending on the day, there may be soccer/baseball games going on. So if you want, and think this location is worthy, I will make the calls to the township and ask if it's even an option.

Here are some pics of where it is:

the sussex airport has little or no security, you can drive right up on the grouds without hassle. i'm mot just saying this i live close by and go there all the time on my harley. If you talk to the right people thay will let you even run down the runway (its a private airport) there are burnout marks on both sides. its very rural (grass fields, some old planes, farms, and mountains for a background) I'll try to get some pics and post them if anyone is interested.

I really think that the airport idea is the way to go. I honestly think it can be done, wheather its at a rinky dink airport or even a decent sized one.

Yea, that airport might be a good idea. My grandparents have a farm just down the street from there (at the corner of 565 and beemer church road).

I know the sussex airport, that would also be a really nice cruise. I love those country style roads. I haven't been there in a long time though.

We should still call first.

Calling or making contact is going to be the key here. For anyone who has suggested an airport at which they have a conact person available, or they know a contact number, I encourage you to use them/it. I would rather know now rather than last second what will be available to us vs. what won't for planning purposes.

The airport doesnt' have to be "scenic". Any airport will have what we need (taxi ways, and runways). I thought this was decided as our primary spot for the photo shoot (or at least that was the impression I was under). Personally I really think this will be the best. But, we need the people who have suggested airports that are near them, that they think would be okay with us having this photo shoot to contact the airports and find out! Only then will we have something we can rely on for this.

If all else fails, and there is absolutly no chance for a photo shoot at an airport, I would vote to have the photo shoot near the beech.

Personally I think fields and trees may be nice for some certain photo's, but I have yet to be impressed with a car picture that was used with trees or grass.

i think we should see if we can get everyone together one night by hot dog johnnys and line the cars up like in some old drive in 50s/60s photos, but with late model cars.. i was there tongiht and the place looks great with neon lights at night. thats on the way back from the water gap, theres plenty of places for pictures there as well... that is if this whole airport thing doesnt pan out.

everyone whos getting impatient, please keep in mind that right now is the time of finals for many of the people on the board.. calling up various airports near them isnt high on their priority list until finals pass.

I'll be honest. The location is absolutly everything to me. Parking lots, and most beeches just won't do it for me. If we can get it at an airport as suggested earlier I am in, as it will be one sweet picture oportunity. Other than that, and I'll probably have to pass.

Edgewater/ft. lee parking lots = overlook if not right on the Hudson, with NYC in the background.

If you are still interested in the Sussex Airport, someone should call them about a photo shoot for the morning of June 30th, since it's less than 10 minutes away from the Chatterbox, where the club meet will be that afternoon :)

Great!! Now, do you know the airfield manager? Or someone there that may provide leverage for us to do this? If so, please call ASAP so we can get this thing set in stone, and to give us a firm date. If not, let me know, and I will give him a call and see what I can do. Either way, its summer already, lets get this thing going!
