What type of shifter? Does it have adjustable shift stops?

IIRC, the T56 has internal stops, right?

Tell us what happens when you attempt to shift into an even numbered gear....Does it feel like it goes in, but just rev like it's in neutral? Do you feel/see it hitting anything?

Yeah, but some aftermarket shifters have external stops that pop the trans out of gear if they are adjusted wrong. A rare case, but I just want to eliminate that possibility.

If it was working fine for a few months, and then just stopped, without you making any changes, I'm guessing that something is wrong with the trans internally.

I don't know enough about them to guess what though.
