It's pretty costly and alot of work. You are looking at easily dropping $4-5000.00 to do it correctly (including a trans, clutch etc).

dont do it. IF you want a stick, i would sell your car and buy a camaro with a manual. Unless you have nothing better to do with your time and money, go for it. But i looked into it for my car, i just thought of it as "beggers cant be choosers" haha

could doing a conversion like this also cause issues? I'm just thinking of cars with +50K miles on (like most 4th Gens have now, unless they're garage queens). Don't internal seals of the motor get conditioned to certain performance ranges and shift points. Example: if you have a auto and your car normally shifts at 2500RPM's unless ur beating the hell outa it, and the car has gotten "used" to it, couldn't you cause problems down the line if all of a sudden you swap in a 6-speed and now you shift at around 3-3500RPMS (that is what i do, lol)? Like it is more wear and tear on the motor then the motor has been used to. On the whole drivetrain for that matter, isn't it?

Take the LS1 "piston slap" issue. Oil consumption and "slap" is more of an issue on manual cars my uncle said (who has been a chevy mechanic forever) b/c they are always above 3000 RPMS, he said ppl with automatics don't have as much of an issue with "piston slap" and the accompanied oil burning issue b/c they don't rev as high on a day-to-day basis (I'm lucky, it isn't much of an issue for my manual LS1).

No, this shouldn't have any direct effect on engine life. Now if you go and start abusing the car more now that you have a 6 speed, that's another story. But running the car up to 3500 RPM between gear changes is far from abusing it.

In fact, I would say that NOT letting the car "stretch it's legs" once in a while is the real abuse.... ;)
