hey guys... i posted a while ago about like a jolting when i go to accelrate etc. im thinking it could be a tranny mount. is there a way to inspect them to see if thats it? and is it hard to replace? i really think its the tranny mount though because the shifter is like bouncy whenever i hit a bump etc.

your car a v6 or v8? They're easy no matter what but a little more time consuming on the v6s

like I said... auto or manual?

I have an auto, so I'll explain how to tell this way.

Does it clunk when you go from park to drive, or reverse, or anything?

If you nail it from a stop can you hear or feel the trans clunk on the tranny tunnel?
If it's bad enough, this can happen just going over bumps driving or even by your motor torquing. Mine was like that when I snapped the bolt one time.

If you wanna go poly, it's not exactly a direct swap, but I have a crossmember in my garage out a 3.8 / 4l60e car that's already got the bolthole elongated for a poly mount. That takes care of 2/3rds of it for you

its manual but yeah, when i go to accelerate somewhat hard you can feel a clunk, when i let off the gas i can feel it clunk

does the shifter move excessively when you hit the gas? sounds like a tranny mount to me.

The tranny mount is simple to replace. Total time should be less than 20 minutes. It's only held in by a few bolts. I'd be willing to give you a hand with it one night (I'm right over in Ewing).

remeber, poly on a v6 = notch the crossmember (got an extra in the garage) and shim it up 1/2" ish

what should i buy? should i wait until we see if it is the mount? im thinking this weekend would be great because of the good weather we are supposed to get

Tru2Chevy

Well it's easy to check yourself to see if it's the mount. Just crawl under there and look. If it doesn't seem obvious, just push up on the back of the trans a bit and see if the mount is cracked.

yeh i got mine in took about 30 minutes but its alot harder ride witht he urethane one i used its really ez to do just 3 bolts and u have to support the car on jackstands and use a floorjack to lift the tranny up enough for the bolt to get by

i see... as someone stated above it is supposedly harder on the v6 manual? which i have... but i am hoping to do this soon because i noticed lately that it has been moving excessively and dont want to damage anything

Did you ever go underneath to verify that it was the tranny mount?

havent gotten a chance... im almost positive as it is bouncing a good amount when i hit a bump and whatnot... what would it look like if it is bad? what else would cause this to happen?

i didnt think v6's produced enuf power to break the tranny mount take a screwdriver to the rubber mount and see if it moves or split

Bandit

I think mine busted this weekend, guess I should of replaced it when the trans and rear was done. Feels like smothing trying to break through the console when in gear and clunks when you put it in gear.

now Do I replace it with the 1le again or go poly.

His is a 95, it could have gotten worn out enough to break.

bobb1589

it kinda is split not really split but like kinda like deteriorating haha... um... i guess ill replace it when i get a chance... didnt look too hard... what is it? just jack up the car... support the tranny with a floor jack or something.. take out the bolt from the tranny and the bolt from the crossmember and just replace? i have no clue... i just kinda figured that from looking at it

Yea, get the car up on jackstands, then unbolt the trans mount from the crossmember. Then jack the trans up a little by the pan (use a small block of wood to keep from denting the pan). Then unbolt the mount from the trans, bolt in new mount, and lower trans carefully back onto the cross member. Bolt the mount back up to the crossmember, and you're good to go.

ok thats easy enough... just one more thing... does anyone have a picture of how the mount is supposed to sit on the tranny? if the rubber part is actually supposed to touch my tranny... then its definitely shot haha

Savage_Messiah

that's a stock one. Poly's are on the shelf at autozone.... just look for the GM tranny mount

edit: if you go with sock, I need you to do me (and lots of people) a HUGE favor and measure the distance, with a stock mount, from the crossmember to the tranny

bobb1589
05-08-2007, 02:03 PM
is there a bet going on for the distance? :p... the poly's look much different right?

They don't make a poly mount for that specific application - you have to shim it with washers when you install it.

The poly mount is the standard GM RWD trans mount that they have been using for decades.

so since its my DD i should just put the stock in and not deal with the aftermarket poly?

Yes. Do not bother with poly.

Well I've had poly for a long long time, and the original one.... it kinda backed the bolt out on rt. 4 one night, all of a sudden I hear the bolt and washers hit the ground and my tranny started clunking around on the trans tunnel lol. Nobody has an exact height for the stocker (at least nobody whos un-lazy enough to share), so I've been trying to find otu the exact height so I can make sure it's shimmed up exactly to where it's supposed to be, and I'm pretty sure there are more people in my situation too.

Well, the rubber mount does move around some. If your shifter was loose, you would probably hear a clunk or rattle every time you shifted - wouldn't be a bad idea to pull up the boot and take a look at the bolts anyway though.
