View Full Version : Any former soda addicts ?

I'm struggling with being addicted to soda and I need help!

Does anyone here drink any other healthy alternatives besides water? Don't get me wrong I think water is great and I usually drink 2 bottles a day, but there are some times when I want something different to go with a meal, especially one with no flavor.

I'm struggling to get myself into some sort of steady eating habits. I used to be able to eat what I wanted (in moderation of course) & I drank A LOT of soda yet it never affected me. But lately I have been uncomfortable with my appearance and some more severe things like a unusually high cholesterol & lack of a drive to do things. I find my self more & more complaining about a of lacking energy, a drive to accomplish things, and just always being tired (lazy). I seriously think it has something to do with my work environment.

I need help!

at a restaurant, something like fruit punch or water...at home, gatorade is good stuff.

and i know what you mean about being tired, i used to drink soda with my lunch at work every day, and i'd get really tired around 3:00 every day...started drinking gatorade or green tea and that doesnt happen anymore unless we're really dead

I used to drink soda 24/7. Finally kicked that habbit by stocking up on alternatives. Mainly fruit punches, apple juice, coconut water and a little gatorade. The only time I drink soda now is at restaurants since its almost always the cheapest thing with some flavor.

I can't deal with the thick syrup type of drinks like most soda and fruit punch. I probably drink 100-150 oz of water a day because I get an annoying phlegm buildup that I need to wash down constantly. Then a beer or 2 at home. I hardly drink any soda at all anymore. The carbonation in soda is also leading to big increases in throat cancer so that's another reason to avoid soda. If I need something with flavor, I usually go with iced tea.

I drink on average a gallon of water a day, I drink soda on extremely RARE occasions, however juices (without all the sugar BS) and the tropicana fruit water (dont remember the name) are usually waht I drink. Soda makes me feel sick, and if it can ***** up car paint, just thing what it does to your insides!

i used to drink soda a lot when i was in high school. i dont even know why i stopped, but i pretty much only drink non carbonated things like lemonade, fruit punch, real fruit juice, and mostly just water. after drinking water for so long, a lot of syrup based drinks taste way too sweet to me, and unless its 100% fruit juice, all the fake sweeteners taste terrible to me.

whoa that's weird... it didn't require one from google..

Aug. 15, 2006 -- Drinking carbonated beverages may not raise the risk of certain types of cancers of the esophagus and stomach after all, a new study shows.

In 2004, researchers in India noted that esophageal cancer rates had risen along with consumption of carbonated soft drinks.

The new study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, finds no such connection.

"This study gives no support for the hypothesis that the use of carbonated soft drinks contributes to the increasing incidence of this cancer," conclude Jesper Lagergren, MD, and colleagues.

Lagergren and his colleagues looked at two cancer types:

* Esophageal adenocarcinoma: a common type of cancer of the esophagus, which connects the mouth to the stomach.
* Cardia adenocarcinoma: cancer of the cardia, the part of the stomach nearest to the esophagus.

They included cardia cancer because it and esophageal adenocarcinoma tend to strike similar groups of people.

Other research has also tilted away from a cancer-carbonation link.

In January 2006, experts at Yale University reported no ties between carbonated soft drinks and esophageal cancer after an observational study of about 1,000 esophageal cancer patients and 687 people without cancer.

The Study

Lagergren and his colleagues looked at three groups of people living in Sweden:

* 189 esophageal cancer patients
* 262 cardia cancer patients
* 820 people without cancer

Participants completed surveys about what they ate and drank currently and 20 years earlier.

The data showed no increased risk of esophageal or cardia cancer among those who reported drinking any amount of fizzy drinks, including soft drinks and carbonated, low-alcohol beer.

The results held after adjusting for factors such as smoking, reflux, BMI (body mass index, which relates height to weight), socioeconomic status, alcohol, and fruit and vegetable intake.

Since this was an observational study, it didn't directly test carbonated drinks for cancer risk, which would require giving some people carbonated drinks and others a placebo to see which group got more cancers. That's a test unlikely to be done.

I used to drink a lot of soda, too, but don't anymore. Every now and then I'll still have a frosty mug of root beer, though. But now I drink mostly cranberry grape juice...it's loaded with antioxidants, and has 100% vitamin C. I actually buy it by the case at Costco. I will have iced tea sometimes, too, but I try to stay away from it because of all the added sugar.

I used to drink 3 liters of mountain dew every day when I was in college.....now I drink several bottles of water a day, and prolly only drink soda once or twice per week.

When I was dorming at willy P i completely kicked it. I'd have maybe 1 can of soda a week, and the carbonation would kick my ass... it was all water and iced teas for me.

But my dad only drinks soda and coffee so since I've been home it's back... I'm at like 4 cans a day-ish.

Not sure how healthy it is but try Sprite Zero. It's has damn near the same taste as regular Sprite with no sugar or carbs.

I'm a soda addict too and it sucks. I drink a ton of water at work but I like to have soda with dinner which still kills me.

I weaned myself off soda years ago, the acid in it will wreck your teeth (even diet soda). I’m down to one diet coke at lunch, and out at restaurants (or beer). I drink a lot of water at work and in the garage. I also down the Crystal Light at home. I like that Propel stuff too. I try to stay away from sugary drinks – I’ve been drinking diet coke so long that regular soda is way too sweet for me. Except margaritas. Yummy.

I used to drink soda, mainly dr. pepper, like it was water...decided i wanted to be healthy again...

I try to drink at least a gallon of water a day...

When I need an alternative, I will generally have a small glass of ocean spray cran grape light. I try to stay away from generally anything with high fructose corn syrup in it so most other juices are out.

Diet sodas are ok every once in a while...

When working out gatorade and the like are ok, but if you aren't doing any real physical activity those drinks are doing more harm than good.

I don't like it, but health magazines have been saying that black coffee is excellent for you, especially in the morning...boosts your metabolism and keeps you alert. I also don't drink alcoholic beverages, but a beer or glass of wine a day is healthy.

You should only drink gatorade when you've lost electrolytes from sweating. If you drink it like a beverage all the time it's too much sodium. There is a lot of salt in gatorade. No good for the heart.
I substitute soda for iced tea. The caffiene is worse in iced tea than it is in soda, but whatevs. I get the unsweetend kind in a restaurant, keep the sugar light, or use splenda. I dont recommend the iced tea if you wanna stay away from caffiene. Don't get the raspberry kind, that's almost always a fountain tea, along with peach, and has just as much sugar as soda, if not more.

if you wanna flavor your water you could always get some of those little travel packs of light tea mix or lemonade.

Ohh, and Vitamin Water is AWESOME.

I do the same, I order an unsweetened iced tea but I add nothing to it. Just tea and water.

Vitamin Water is now under the Coke Umbrella, BTW. I'm not sure if that will change anything.

soda is tough to stop drinking because the extra sugar and caffeine boosts your body depending on how much you drink. You stopping cold turkey will usually lead to you feeling lethargic because your body isn't getting its usual pick me up. I would try having less soda every week and then lowering that amount each successive week. If you honestly can't stop then go with a 0-calorie version so your not taking in the unnecessary calories but still get the fizz you like.

Good luck

I love soda (Coke). I know i drink alot of it but just cant help it. I always have a stock of it at home. At my part time jod is no help either cause they stock the fridge with free soda for the employees. The only time I dont really drink soda is at my full time job. They have a soda machine but its almost always sold out. So I just drink water, but now with summer here I do find myself drinking more water than soda but I do find myself reaching for a soda but I try to stop myself.
