need that stupid special tool to take off the fuel lines and then its mostly just bolts til i get the heads off...
also, i always had a tapping on the pass side, found out why...one of the rockers is loose, but the bolt holding it on is tight. weird.

What tool is it for the fuel line?
GP99GT
05-03-2007, 02:36 PM
its that dumb thing that clamps over the line like a clam....i actually found out you dont really need to undo the lines, theres enough play to just move the rail out of the way

nice super mega ultra extra long coil wire going over the fan!!!!!!!!!!
just kiddin, its always fun in the beginning taking it all apart. Then frustrating when its taking too long to get it all back together, but then its worth it in the end. :)
You gonna spray bomb the engine bay with most of the motor apart there? What all you doing? Explorer heads, cam, intake and stuff?
GP99GT
05-03-2007, 04:22 PM
already has the explorer intake, im putting on ported stock heads and 1.7 RR's. and yeah im gonna attempt to clean up as much crap as i can while im in there, heads are painted black, valve covers i just painted black today....should look pretty sweet when its all said and done
i would be going with a cam too, but i dont have the money, and i want to drive the car sometime this summer so the stock cam will have to do.

todays progress...got the fuel rails off, got the lower intake off, took off the alternator bracket, the P/S bracket, and other stuff attached to the heads. also brought my valve covers back home from work, and my ported heads too, so theres pictures of those.
as it sits now:

http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/2027/progress006eu8.jpg
stuff left to do...take off the headers, take out the head bolts...and i should be home free. then its reassembly and spending money on head bolts, rockers, etc
w00t looking goooooood congrats on the progress

Gaskets are more expensive then they seem also. Then I usually go other tune ups when stuff like that is off. Oil, plugs and so on .... so add in antifreeze, belt, pcv valve, 2+2 cleaner, ect. The you spend 200 bucks on other things you didnt think of when you started doing it. :)

05-04-2007, 08:43 AM
wow, good work on that thing man. whats the difference between mustang heads and explorer heads, more airflow?
GP99GT
05-04-2007, 09:20 AM
yeah explorers have GT40 heads and intake, basically what the 93 cobra has. i only have the explorer intake, the heads are stock mustang heads but theyre ported
Blacdout96
05-04-2007, 12:26 PM
They have GT-40 heads!!! man if i knew that id of taken a friends motor of his, he had an explorer block, and i always wondered y he wouldnt let it go so cheap, I was like dude its not like its out of a mustang or anyhting, man was a sneaky bastard lol.
GP99GT
05-04-2007, 03:09 PM
yeah...the 96-97 has GT40 heads, 98+ has GT40P which has a different spark plug angle which makes it hard to use with certain headers, but they flow the best

Very nice, that's coming along great! I suggest you cover the block up with some heavy-duty plastic trashbags, then clean the strut towers/firewall and paint everything. It's not a lot of work, for a huge improvement in looks under the hood.

05-05-2007, 03:22 PM
eh i just wanna drive the car....no time for painting
its so nice out, i wanna enjoy it for the summer

05-05-2007, 04:02 PM
lookin good, when you call it quits for the day, I suggest spraying inside the cylinders with WD40 to protect them against any form of precipitation/condensation, unless of course you're going balls to the wall and throwing the new heads on tonight

all day scraping off head gaskets, what are you using, your thumbnail? pick up one of those plastic scrapers that you put a razor blade in for scraping paint off glass...save you a lot of time
even easier...get a 90* die grinder with a roloc adapter and buzz all that crap off in 2 minutes 8)

And if you don't have air, you can get the one that goes in the end of a drill. I used my drill/roloc wheel to clean the gasket crap off the intake manifold, and it went quick. If you do it with the roloc, just make sure you have a GOOD ShopVac to suck all the dust outta the piston holes.
GP99GT
05-06-2007, 09:35 AM
we've got roloc discs at my work, so maybe ill wait til monday or tuesday to get the gaskets off

k so i took a week off from the car, now im back at it. lower intake is on, fuel rails are bolted back down, electrical connections are made...rockers still need to go on, then valve covers, then upper intake...and then i pray that it runs.

how the car has been sitting for the past few weeks...ugh pollen
http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/4686/progress018tt3.jpg

05-15-2007, 04:21 PM
well my camaros not an LS1 or anything, so a K&N or Wix is not needed for my ride, as long as it keeps the oil clean enough im happy with it.

doesnt matter what kind of motor you have, blackd...fram sucks any way you look at it.
anyway, more pictures from the hour or so i spent on it tonight...rockers are on and torqued down. i put on the valve covers and upper intake just to see what it looks like, and it turns out the 1.7 rockers are a tad too big to fit in the valve covers so i gotta grind the baffles out. but anyway, looks pretty sweet i think.

PureONE is said to be one of the best oil fitlers on the market. Some guy on TGO did a engineering study on a handful. Of course, Fram came in dead last, Wix was good and so did Purolator and PureONE filters. I havent seen anyone around here who sold Wix, and when I worked at Straus, its all we had.

I use napa filters alot. No clue they were WIX. Thats cool. At work we use wix on our diesel fuel tank.

There are some, but I can hit Autozone, Advance Auto, or Pep Boys before I hit a Napa. 2 of the 3 carry PureONE's.
Here is teh Wix info.
Wix (http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html#wix)
Another quality oil filter similar in design to the Purolator.
It has metal end caps on the filter element, a standard nitrile
anti-drainback valve, and a seemingly good flow. They are
manufactured by the Dana corporation. These appear to have a depth
gradient filter element, which uses cotton fibers to progressively
trap smaller particles as they get deeper in the filter. This helps
maintain good flow as the filter gets plugged.
Seems they are on par with the Purolator.

I see it all came together but there is no way i would go thru all that tear down and not cam it. I remember years back when i used to have my 306 Notchback i got a barely used e303 cam for like $55.00. Wish i could do that now lol the cam that just went into my 01 SS on Saturday cost $400
GP99GT
05-23-2007, 09:39 PM
E303's are crapola anyway..decent cam but outdated
we'll see how it does with the stock cam and these heads, and then ill spray it til it dies
