I feel your pain. It's WAAAYYYYY easier if you take off the coil packs :)

bought some block off plates from ls1speed.com. They are like $10. It's a kit that comes with the ones for the A.I.R. and EGR.

did you try to do it from the top or underneath the car?? underneath is MUCH easier. I can pretty much do all 8 in about an hour and a half and I'm not mechanical at all. :)

I still haven't changed that last plug wire on the passenger side. But I'm about to do plugs now anyway so I'm glad I didn't waste too much time.

**** I got the Opti off in an hour. The hardest part is getting the balancer to come off, it never wants to co-operate!

At least you got all 8, I'd probably give up after a half hour.

I used to do the tune ups on my 305 and my V6 f bodies, however I looked under the hood on this LS1 and to say the less.. I'm intimidated.
I've never messed with coil packed before. The dealership quoted $700 for a complete tune up. So needless to say I'm calling around lower Jersey for prices.

its not that hard to move the coil packs up if you have (i think) a 00 up ls1 because they are on a rack, but if its a 98 i tihnk they need to be moved individually

LOL $700 is crazy. Where are you located? I change all my plugs on either on of my LS1s in 45 min. The 1st time i did it took me a long time because i didn't remove the passenger side coilpack. One trick i used is when i put the passenger side coilpack on I only put it back on with 2 bolts so i can remove it faster for next tune up. I also removed the air tubes and made my own blockoff plates

1.) Remove the air pump from the car.
2.) Once removed use a Hacksaw and cut the ends of the metal hoses off (The little piece where the bolts go thru)
3.) Then I got a stainless steel stove isle cover cost $1 at the dollar store
4.) Cut little pieces off of it and used JB weld you could prob use RTV sealant or anything to cover the hole.
5.) Bolted the ends back down

Cost me absolutely nothing but about 10 minutes of time. I had all the stuff here:) I'm sure like stated you can buy blockoff plates. Hope this helps anyone out there that wants to remove their airpump or had the gasket beak and got stuck with hearing that annoying ticking noise that sounds like a header leak!
