3rd gen headlights

ok so my headlight motors are pretty much shot does anyone have any ideas on how to fix them or any cool solutions so there is no need for the flip lights or if anyone has the motors laying around let me no....pulling the lights up by hand is getting pretty old and embarissing

there are aftermarket headlight motors and rebuild kits available and they really aren't too expensive. your local part store should have them, if not i believe the GM parts counter as well as some of the 3rd/4th gen specialty shops sell kits as well.

Are both h/l giving you problems? On my 82, I thought I had bad motors as neither came up. Ended up being a h/l switch.

I'd test first.

i found someone on cardomain that custom made their lights so they dont have to pop up, and i might try that..... i think they look pretty cool

those fog lights SUCK!!!!!!!! use real ones if anything like PIAA or something name brand and they get very hot and will melt the bumper. very cool idea tho

What year headlight motors? they were changed in 87. What are they doing to make you think they are shot? Just grinding? Topdownsolutions sells rebuild kits that include bushings, which are 9 outta 10 times the culprit. Or certain size ball bearings work. That is if thats your problem

Considering all the parts SmokingSS has, he might have a few as well.

I agree with the above - before you replace the motor, check the mechanical parts to make sure nothing is stuck / grinding together, preventing the light from opening. After pressing the switch, turn the knob on the inside of the assembly to manually open the lights. Keep turning to see if they suddenly pop open.

my cars an 88 and when i turn the knob on top nothing happens, so im thinking its the gears or whatevers in there that make them pop up

yeah, if you turn the knob and no movement most likely its the gears.

as of now, i dont have any motors for the headlights, they sell right away usually. One trick ive heard that will give you a few more months of life in them, is to open up the little gearbox attached to the motor, and see what gear is stripped, usually the gear that goes can be flipped the other way and there will be some good teeth on the other side to still work. ive never tried it but thats what ive heard, if it does work its a cost free TEMPORARY fix.

goto http://www.top-downsolutions.com/ they have everything u'll need to repair ur headlights.. my headlights would intermitantly not flip up/stay fliped up when i turned the lights off and it was just that the nylon bushings actually disintegrated and failed working..the fix was easy and they work like a charm now. also, the owner of the site is very knowledgable and will gladly answer any/all of the questions u have pertaining ur headlights...i was on the phone with him easily for a half hour, really nice guy.
