I got the monthly newsletter and everything is great. Then at the bottom of the news letter there is a short paragraph about how the club is now affiliated with SEMA in someway and goes onto say that this requires a more responsible attitude by the club, especially with respect to street racing and the like.
Now we have a poll asking everyone's preferred alcoholic beverage??? Is it me or is that maybe not the most responsible type of poll to be on the main page of the web site? In the lounge maybe? In the basement totally legit. On the main page???
Not trying to throw stones at anyone individually. To an outsider looking in, that is not a good poll to have out in the open on an automobile enthiusiast type board. The connection between alcohol and driving under the influence are far too serious to have that out there on the main page. Anywhere else, fine. Just not on the front page.

Chris, the software package we use to create the front page automatically lists the most recent poll in the lower left corner of the page.
I understand your concern about promoting drinking and driving, but there are no posts in the thread discussing drinking and driving, and the thread was created in the lounge, which is an open forum for all discussion, as long as that discussion doesn't violate the forum rules.
- Justin
yea i think we need more rules to restrict what we can and can not post in the lounge.

"One of the side effects of our increased profile and sway is that we also must grow to be an example among the enthusiast community. For this reason we can no longer allow threads, pictures, or videos that describe, promote, or otherwise condone street racing and other overt criminal activity. More detailed information about this new policy will be included in a revised set of forum rules that will be posted this coming week."
It just an observation.....people. Nothing more.
To me the preceding paragraph implies that the admins are trying to take the next step, progress is good. I am fully aware drinking is a legal activity for those of age. I am sure that there are plenty of members not of legal age. The connection is far too easy to make between drinking and driving, let alone underage drinking or even worse underage drinking and driving by having a poll of that nature on the main page. Put it in the lounge, the basement, in the classifieds.....anywhere but on the main page.
I could be reading entirely too much into........if so, shame on me.

i think you are too chris... but i do see where you're coming from. but unfortunately the software can't filter out the alcohol related polls from the car related polls.

I can certainly see your concern, but I don't really agree that a poll about alcoholic beverages paints us in a bad light. It is legal to drink if you are over 21 and most people that I've come across in the hobby enjoy a cold beer or something like that from time to time. I don't think this is a cause for concern at present.
However, polls and posts that are crude, graphic, or illegal DO paint us in a bad light and that certainly is bad for the club image (IMO). If there was a poll about what your favorite recreational drug is, or what your favorite sexual "maneuver" is, or how many times you have evaded the local PD etc we would axe it.

i dont see anything wrong with the poll in terms of responsibily, drinking is something that can be done responsibly and i think doing sets a better example then not mentioning drinking at all
its not like the poll said "Whats your favorite thing to drink in your F-Body"

there was no mention of driving in the thread at all...so im thinking youre reading way too deep into it. im fairly certain the average person knows that driving drunk is retarded

I can see both sides of this argument, if the consuming of alcohol is done by people of the legal age, then there is no problem...however if it includes underage drinking, thats when the line has been crossed. Thats my personal opinion.

Which has NOTHING to do with this poll. It's a simple poll about your favorite drink. It didn't ask what is your favorite drink while driving, nor did it ask what was your favorite drink when you were 15yrs old.
Not sure why people are in such arms over a stupid poll.,

All it takes is one person to flip out over something completely ludacris such as this to make anything in jersey full of laws and restrictions.
well it makes sence that since it seems about 80% of our active members are underage, that there may be a problem, but whatever

Which is why NJ is such a f'in Nazi state. Let's legislate EVERYTHING until people can't breath.
PA is getting that bad too.

Ummm...I wasnt responding to the pole, I was simply responding to what was said in this thread...when you have underage kids adding their favorite alcoholic drinks to the mix, thats where I see a problem!

I apologize for opening this can of worms. This was not my intent. I don't care what anyone's favorite drink is, alocohol or otherwise. I simply saw it as a borderline pole in light of the monthly email and trying to elevate the staus of the board. That's all.
I am not advocating more rules or regs or another moderator to act as a babysister or anything else.
Consider this scenario (because this is what immediately ran through my mind): The board decides to stand behind some form of legislation related to our hobby. A petition is put together, we as individuals unite, sign it and send it off. Or a form letter is put together and we each send copies to our local representative. Hundreds of letter start landing the mailboxes of these representatives, maybe the website is signature of the letter. ONE of the reps decides to check out the site, get a feel for who he/she is dealing with. And on the main page of the website is the poll asking you is your favorite alcoholic drink. Do you think the credibility of the board would be strengthed or weakend by such an occurence? Or possibly a sponsor is condsidering contacting the board about sponsorship, so the potential sponsor checks in and sees that? Maybe it's laughed at and not given a second look, maybe not?
