copy of what i wrote to one of them in an email:

your car is worth about $50. i looked over the pictures and see gaping holes between body parts, nasty rust HOLES all over the undercarriage, holes in the floor pan, and that rust on top of the body is not just surface-based, it goes deep. i can't believe you thieves are still out there taking advantage of the sheep. stop it before someone comes to your door and smacks you in the head with some reality.

he was asking $3500 for a run of the mill '70 firebird. i am not exaggerating in my assessment above. no motor, (oops) trans, and swiss cheese for sheet metal. i swear i am glad i don't own a gun. people like this make me want to vomit.

when they pulled the motor, they left the transmission, accessories and even the exhaust behind. while it looks like there's enough oil on the x-member to save it, you can't see the whole thing - i'm guessing it has rust on/under it as well. notice no pics from underneath the car - telltale sign that this one is beyond saving. all you'd be buying is the VIN - hardly worth 3500.

you know what jim, i was trying to explain this to my friend yesterday. there are too many people trying to rip people off for those old cars. i mean, we looked at one of those muscle car dealerships and i was looking at the prices and i wanted to scream. they are asking crazy prices, but thats not what bothers me. the fact that some schmuck is actually gonna pay that actually makes them think that those cars are worth that kinda money. it kills me as well.

mine has rust holes in the quarters where its common for the converts....but the interior, glass, roof, and floors are solid, and the rest of the body seems good.....

ill have to clean up the garage and get some pics so that some of you guys can give me opinions, but i do know that one of my dads friends offered him 12k as it sits

it's true that the market dictates the pricing, but some of these guys are selling junk - literally - for astronomical prices. i agree that the prices are way out of hand, as when i told the guy at hagerty's that my car was worth 32k he didn't even hesitate for a second to agree to it. this was after he saw my pictures, btw. i don't really think it's worth that much, but it sure is calming to know when i am driving it that (god forbid) if i do get into an accident, i can get the replacement parts to get it back to 100%.

The prices are what the market will bear. I'd say that car is worth around $1000 IF it has a V8 vin.

It's worth $3500 if it has a briefcase with 25 hundred dollar bills in it in the trunk.

A car is worth what a buyer will pay...it works both ways. Who here would prefer to sell a car for $500 when you could probably get $3500? I hate it because that's the reason I can't buy one of these cars. I mean come on, multiple thousands for a rusted shell? But hey, if they find a buyer, then there ya go.

i thought the same thing until i found my car. i had a certain price point to stay under and i looked -forever- with nothing to show for my search. then, as chance would have it, one day i took a wrong turn and ended up the owner of my beauty (reader's digest abridged version), for less than my budget limit.

never say never. i know of at least two people that have more know-how and experience with cars than bucks that ended up getting what they wanted at a price they could afford. keep the gods happy, is all i can say to you. they'll smile down on you one day. they've smiled down on jeff-jl8 twice that i know of.

i tottaly agree with this entire thread. im so tired of going to look at huge pieces of ****, even if priced accordingly, that in the ad the owner/seller says the car is in great shape or mint, then u get there and its far from mint. when my dad was looking for his DD monte carlo he actually yelled at someone for advertising one as MINT lol man did he tear into them.
dealers are a whollle other story. i once had to tell a dealer what motor the new (at the time) monte carlos had, i was like 13 then lol.

totally agree, that car is not worth *****, I bought my nova for $1,300 from guy and its in far better condition than that car. The only way to be able to own a muscle car is if you find some local old guy that has had it forever.

true, my friend bought a ford explorer for 200 and he put about 700 into it and he put it in the front of his yard with a for sale sign on it priced at 2,800 and some stupid kid bought it for 2,600. They also put the price that hight because some guy will come along and see it and talk the guy down 300 and buy it thinking he got a great price

rule of thumb for me has always bee that if you see a car for $1,200 they want $1,000 if you see a car for $21,000 they want $20,000 and when you offer them $20,000 for a car thats priced at $21,000 they will make that stupid face like they are really mulling it over and sometimes even blame their wife and tell you some line of ***** like "I have to the full amount or she'll kill me" knowing damn well they are prepaired to sell it for 20k even. Its probably not even the 1k its more like some ego thing. I uaually look over the car and come back with what i think its worth to me, and tell um, look this is what i have and show it to um, if they say no, there are 1000 more cars like it for sale somewhere. Thank god for the internet.

Actually, the real problem is that a lot of buyers want a steal of a deal. I know I'm always looking for one. But in reality, the market dictates the realistic price. Do your homework, don't rush into anything and get burned by a fake or misrepresented car. You pay market value and you'll worry if it was a good idea. 1-2 years later and your car's worth 25-100% more than you paid and you'll be smiling. :mrgreen: But I paid market value for both my rare cars knowing they had good history and paperwork which helps hold/enhance value. I took out a 3 year loan for the first one and a 5 year loan for the second one. Hopefully I will recoup my money some day. I've never made a penny profit on any old cars so don't expect to. I think I've come real close to breaking even on about 10-12 first gen cars but I got to drive and enjoy most of them so that's where the real value is at. And the way I look at it is that every car I've sold has led to next one that is even better. You have to start somewhere and then save up while you enjoy the starter car and when you have enough, sell it, take your saved up money and buy the next level.

me and my dad got a 66 chevelle, it was a rustbucket and had no motor or trans...we got it for 500 and sold it for 1750 on ebay with starting bid of 250.

we also had a 71 rs ss splitbumper camaro, once again, rust bucket with no motor but had a trans, got it for 300 and sold it for 1500 on ebay with starting bid of 250.

i also had a 87 firebird and 85 camaro that i got as a pair for 400 and i sold the firebird on ebay for 450 with starting bid of 300 and camaro i sold locally for 50 bucks cuz it was a pos and i was moving and couldnt take it. so there are people out there who will buy crap for hundreds.
