Well I ask this because over the past 5 years i have run into and worked with alot of people from out of state also in state and they all complained how expensive NJ was. It kinda made me think about things, high insurance, property taxes etc. I'm also pretty sure the general cost of living is alot higher than other states and I'm sure some of you guys up around the NY/NJ border prob see some super high prices on things. I'm a Union Carpenter and currently make $36.76 a hr and i can't say i absolutely hate my job but the money is ok but i'd rather not work at all lol. How about you guys. I would really like to move to the Ft. Lauderdale area and drive around in a droptop Vette if i could have it my way!
my base this year is 41k.........as of the halfway point of the year im at 37k so yeah ill blow my base away

yea, I can honestly say the Union is a good thing. You will learn tons of **** on every Job. Also you will learn stuff to make you cash on the side doing side work for people. I have been in 5 years. I came in with 0 experience and starting pay back then was 12.00. Now with no experience starting pay is 15.10 and raises every 6 months until you reach rate and finish apprentice school

i love my job. it gets me in shape, it teaches me a valuable trade, and the people are all 23-25 years old and fun guys.
one of my friends is a union welder... and he makes something like $42 an hour... which isnt bad at all when youre 19 years old and a fulltime student!

Downside is that living in NY where I do I need to make about double that to live comfortably. Anyone who is complaining about prices in Jersey can come up here and pay $3.75 for a gallon of 93 octane. Also average property taxes here are abput $8-11,000 dollars a year, glad I have acondo :)

Although my current job is seasonal with Scotts, my boss has managed to keep me longer then expected. I'm currently making $14 an hour working merchandising for Scott's/Miracle Grow @ 6 Home Depot locations in my area.
The money is great, the other guy I work with is awesome, my boss is great to us, and the hours are perfect. I just hope I can stay on through the rest of the year even if its part time.

Hey you wage earners, remember to factor the value of your benefits. Healthcare, retirement, etc., all adds up. A $20@hr job with good benes is probably better then a $30 one with none.

Vitals, the longer you wait to start investing in your future the longer you'll be working to make up for that lost time. Compound interest is the greatest thing in the world; take full advantage of it
ohh Genesis health care (peeps that pay my *****) doubles everything that gets taken away from my paycheck i believe, plus there's interest. I just said its to early to think about  doesn't mean nothing is there.

Sorry to hear about your business. I've been at a crossroads with my job; been teaching at the lowest paying district in Bergen County for the last nine years. I thought about quitting and going into business for myself, but after hearing your story I may re-think it. Last year I made somewhere around 50K (between teaching and all the side work I do), and we survived. My wife was out of work last year since we just had a baby girl. I also have a 4-year old boy, a mortgage, plus all the utilities and whatnot. But my wife and I put down a good amount on our house, and bought it six years ago before the prices went insane. The monthly payment on our house is less than what some people pay to rent an apartment in trendy places like Hoboken. You can live on $50K with a family of four, but you certainly won't be spending $10K of it to buy a new motor, taking long expensive vacations, or any other non-necessities. Family is priority numero uno. Now my wife is back to work, so things are looking up. Gotta save $$ now for the additions on our house; need an extra bedroom and a new garage. :)

eh, some unions arent what they used to be. mine sucks. more currupt then you can immagine. better then nothing, but its not like it was 20yrs ago when the men had a say. at least in my particular one. im a 5th year, out of my time in sept. our 5th year rate is 34.46, plus vacation. we're probably one of the highest in the UA, and most of the country. plumbers and sprinklers are always within a dollar of us, either way.
as far as benefits.......you wont find any better benefits then in most unions. i have 95% dental converage, nearly full medical, prescription, $250/yr for eyes (which they screwed us on). plus annuity fund, and a vacation fund. i had an ex ***** of mine who worked as some kind of import/export seller. made 2K/week with commisions.....but when she had a root canal done, had to pay $1500 out of her own pocket. when i had one done, it cost me personally less then $100.

I run a Hallmark store..... and I'm a male yes LOL. I can tell you working retail SUCKS totally. You get to work 7 days a week, every holiday, if someone calls out you have to work for them, and customers are dicks. As for pay I get $250 a week on the books, and the rest is cash. The cash varies on weather or not my sales were good for the week. So my pay could be $400-$500 during a normal week(check+cash), and like....$800-1000 during the holidays. But the perks are my store pays for my car insurance, about 60% of my gas since i drive 30 miles a day, and my cell phone (since i use it for everything store related). I couldn't give an accurate figure on what i make yearly though, its always different. As for living in NJ well, i still live with my parents. Moving out is almost impossible without any help. To buy a house in my town is like $300,000 for a small one, and the places around me are even more expensive! I'll be 23 in august and i want out of my house bad, but i can't afford anything. I'm close to finishing my 2 year degree in law enforcement so i can finally get in the academy and try to get into the Sheriff's Office. Till than i just want out of my parents house!

working in retail you make s**t for money. i worked at shop rite for a year and made like 6.50. then i worked at acme for 2 years and made a whopping 8.50. im working at radioshack now and its a pretty easy job, theres alot of down time for you to do whatever you want (for example right now ) i make min wage (7.15?) plus 2.5% commission on stuff over $75. so i make anywhere from $7.15-$8.50 depending on how much i sell. when this semester starts ill be making $8.50 working at one of the computer labs.

From an accounting point of view, you probably 'make' 20% more then that. And that is good for you. An a lot of unions have fringe benefits via Credit Unions, Pension Plans, etc., like reduced loan costs - that is a nice perk too. In the big pic, that matters. Your pay is often more then the paycheck reflects.

The AF only has a BAH(basic allowance for housing) adjustment based on location. I get $1100 for housing which would barely cover an apartment/bills associated with it. Atleast I have a roommate for now which takes me down to $650 for a house. Next year is going to be rough though.

It's guys like you & the union guys & the full time guys I was mostly referring to about 'total compensation', ie retirement & healthcare. From an accounting point of view, you probably 'make' 20% more then that. And that is good for you. An a lot of unions have fringe benefits via Credit Unions, Pension Plans, etc., like reduced loan costs - that is a nice perk too. In the big pic, that matters. Your pay is often more then the paycheck reflects.
i know. our 'package' for a typical journeyman costs the GC about $100/hr, including vacation fund, annuity, benefits, retirement, etc. etc. we just got a credit union, through 102 actually. its not the greatest, but its something. used them when i bought my land in upstate NY. i was going to try for their mortgage but their rates were higher then a regular bank.
all this talk about money made me add up some numbers......doing it the yuppie way, i figured out i make over 70K/yr right now, going to just over 90K in sept. thats all without overtime. no one ever thinks of it in yearly terms because you barely take home 60% of it, and in this area youre lucky if you work a full year.

yea dude, if all of union guys worked everyday for a year we'd clean up pretty good especially with overtime!! Alot of the times when a job ends or i get laid off I hide for a couple weeks:)

i am not working as of now but am looking so if any one knows of some thing let me know please. :) i worked as a manager for drug emporium for 8yrs made around 43k year, that job was very bad but they would just give me more money to stay and then when they went bankrupt i worked for cpr a carpet repair restoration company we did flood work, fire rip outs, crime scene clean up and carpet cleaning/dyes. last year there made 800wk base plus 2% of all insurance money made by the company and 22% of all work done by me over the 800 base. made out pretty good most times. but the hrs sucked. lots of nights travel and weekends.

Hm, sounds intresting, ill haveto look into it. what kind of backround do you need? Igot both automotive and diesel experience, infact my diesel experience was for a truck rental/leasing company.

The more experience, the better the pay. We have a Heavy Truck department as well as light duty truck and car. If you have heavy diesel experience they want to put you in the HD department.

I did Hino's ( nissans trucks) and Mitsubishi trucks. All the trucks were under CDL required, so i didnt needa CDL license. The biggest trucks we had was 26ft. box trucks, but nothing like 18 wheelers, or CDL trucks. ill have to give them a ring tho cause im sick of workign at Viking, their hours suck as much as their pay does lol, only thing goign for them is their benefits.

I just got a job.
My dad has a 2 family house and he rents the other side out. Well Hes going to pay me under the table for 2 weeks to finish his house up, siding, and wood trim in the kitchen, then raise the pay when I work in the side he rents up, hes gonna teach me plumbing, and everything Ill need to know, so when the day comes, I can take on the house and rent it out and know about all the stuff that might need fixin.
edit.
I also forgot, im gonna be working for my uncle doing odd jobs around his house so he can get top $$ for when he sells his house.

maken 12/hr as a mid level autobody tech... love the job but it has its up and down days.... the autobody industry is going down hill tho i picked the wrong thing to get into... but i enjoy it for the most part... insurance companies really messen stuff up... this buisness is not nearly at lucrative as it used to be... iv heard of people bringing home $1000-$1600 a week back in the 80's who now stuggle to bring home $500 because the insurance companies dont want to pay anymore and the cost of everything has just gone up its hard to keep up anymore...

Im making $100/day working for a handyman pretty much. We just finished painting a 1740s house in Crosswicks, and now kind of doing some odds and ends. If it continues next summer, I will be making $200/day but I will be working full time. This summer I didnt, because I was working at the gas station at the same time, making 8.25. 3days at the gas station 3 days painting. Now with school Ill probably only be working maybe 2 days a week, and maybe a few half days.

To be honest, I'm not sure what that position is. I checked our job postings page and didn't see it. I'm in the call center, that may be something in the business office and they hiring outside the company.

Got the job listing from the following page:
http://clients.arifleet.com/jobs/OTHEREMPLOYMENTOPPORTUNITIES/tabid/800/Default.aspx
There's no location listed so was assuming (hoping?) it was in the same location in southern NJ.
I'll update the status of the application when I find out so others looking at the company for possible employment can get some insight.
Thanks!

my most recent salary was 50, and i spent two and a half hours in the car everyday. i didn't mind the commute and i was good at my job, but the time had come to let it go (don't ask). i don't care much for NJ. if i didn't have family here, i wouldn't have been back after the first time i left. or the second. or the ... last time, either.

ARI has three main buildings in NJ. Two buildings(Business offices) are just off of RT38 at 295 and the Call Center is near the Moorestown Mall, just off of 38 and 73, not to far from the 73 exit off 295. We have sales offices all over the U.S. and Puerto Rico. A second Call Center is being built in Texas now.

I make right around 39k a year..Medical Maintenance contractor for the Air Force @ Mcguire. Not the most exciting stuff ive ever done but it pays the bills and there's very little stress to the job...were getting a new contract soon so there shoud be a nice increase and put me over that big 40k mark a year lol. I have no degree, did a few years in the army and ive only been here 2 years so I guess i cant complain. One part that really blows is I live in absecon w/ my GF so its about an hour commute. I take here 06 corrola s which is really good on gas though. I could be doing better but I could also be doing alot worse. :)
