Trying to search for some guitar tabs, and two random sites have notices that tabs are not available till it's cleared up. Here's what one site google found says:

Dear All Good Tabs vistors,All Good Tabs has been threatened with legal action by the National Music Publishers Association (http://nmpa.org/home/index.asp) and the Music Publishers Association of America (http://www.mpa.org/).
The basis of their position is that by publishing the tabs transcribed by you hard working musicians, we are constituting copyright infringement.
We completely disagree with this and are currently investigating our legal options.
Click here for an explanation of the publishing company's position (http://www.mpa.org/news/show/5), and contact details for you to express your opinions on this matter to them.

Found the tab on some other sites, but still.

The artist owns the song. Someone has paid for/owns the rights to publish the tab. If I paid for the right to publish (and make money)and you give it away for free, guess what I would do?

Because if I go and transcribe a song and decide to publish it, that's my own interpretation of the work. It's a really fine line.

Really good site for guitar/bass tabs, I actually archived just about every band that I like from that site just in case they ever get shut down.

...It's a shame that the MPA is so greedy they try to shut down people who do from-ear interpretations of songs.
