Who reads these days?

I was just curious if anyone else reads books anymore? I'm a huge fan of Action/Spy/Political/Thriller books preferably all wrapped into one story. Probably one of my favorite authors lately has been Vince Flynn.

I just finished his latest book Act of Treason about a month ago and am waiting for Protect & Defend to pop up at a local library. I also just finished Ted Bell's Pirate last night and started the sequel Spy.

Since I haven't been working I've found my self reading a lot more to conserve money. The next book I plan on getting is Killing Pablo by Mark Bowden

Does anyone else have any books they recently read or could recommend?

i read a lot of classic fiction and a newspaper pretty much everyday. i read a ton of automotive stuff, about working on cars, history, and driving.

I love his books. I've been meaning to pick up act of treason, but I figured I'd read all the ones before it first. great writer, I'm reading The Third Option right now and its definitely got me hooked!

i'm finishing up a great book by Ben Carson called Gifted Hands. its a very very quick read and is very spiritual and inspiration. i highly recommend it to anyone!

i read motortrend, car and driver, and the newspaper. i never understood how people have time to read, watch tv or play video games? any spare time i have i go out with friends, work on the cars, research car crap online or sleep... lol

I'll read anything by ,H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert W. Chambers, Robert E. Howard (he created Conan), Brian Lumley, Ramsey Campbell around Halloween every year. The rest of the year I read whatever Warhammer 40,000 novels I can get my hands on, or some other sci-fi. Currently I'm reading "The Ringworld Engineers" by Larry Niven

I'm currently reading "361" by Donald Westlake. I was an English/writing minor in college and I read quite a lot — pretty much once I finish a book I have another one ready to pick up.

I like a lot of classic American Lit., e.g. Steinbeck, Hemingway, Salinger, Beat Generation stuff. I'm also very into noir/crime/pulp fiction, e.g. Mikey Spillane, James M. Cain. I also read a lot of poetry and short stories as well, particularly Raymond Carver's works.

is world war one... IF... the united states lost the civil war to the confederacy due to Foreign Interdiction.

and in it. Woodrow Wilson presides over the Confederacy, and is allied with England and France.
and Theodore Roosevelt presides over the USA, and is allied with Germany.

AWESOME author.. wonderfully written...great concepts..

he also has a series where during world war two... aliens attack earth... and the world at war unites to fight them off..

star wars.. timothy zahn's trilogy is great for star wars fans because it is considered, the trilogy after the trilogy.. nuff said

and Dexter trilogy and Bourne trilogy are both things i'd say read cause the show/movie were awesome for both.

However I've recently been hooked on the non fiction stuff. recently finished the unauthorized biography of Blackwater USA, the mercenary company working in Iraq and other places. Currently reading a brief history of the vikings. Definately enjoying the non-fiction stuff right now. I'll go back to supernatural horror later (vampires, werewolves and demons oh my!)

I still like the classics - Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Gregory Bear, etc.

If I do any pleasure reading, it's philosophy type books, or psychology type books. And a couple others thrown in.

Some good ones I've read.
Philosophyish...Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintanence. It's a lot about this guys trip on his motorcycle...but he's philosophical about a lot. It's an odd read, but I couldn't put it down.

Psychologyish...Running with Scissors. Really good read about the messed up life of a teenage boy realizing he's gay. Hard to put down as well, at least for me.

Other...Down and Out in Paris and London (I think)...George Orwell. Great read.

It's been a while since I've read any of them, and I can't remember much about them now as I've read many a textbook for grad school since. But if you like those types of readings I'd recommend them.

True enough. That's the line of business they are in (among many), but the mentality of the men they hire (all across the world - South Africa, Chile, Thailand, Laos) is definately the mercenary mentality - get paid to fight someone elses war.

Definately a good read and something that may open the eyes if half of what the investigative reporter says is true.

Horror and crime novels. Saw someone threw in James Patterson. I like all of the Alex Cross books, but didn't get into anything else he's written. If you're looking for a cool crime read similar to Patterson, try John Sandford's "Prey" series. Every one of the books has the word Prey in the title ("Rules of Prey," "Eyes of Prey") and there's over a dozen of them. They all feature an investigator from the Minneapolis PD named Lucas Davenport. His character is a little far-fetched, but still interesting plotwise.

Currently reading Steven King's "Lisey's Story." Not bad so far. Read almost everything he's written fiction-wise.

If you like crime novels, I highly recommend this publishing line Hard Case Crime (http://www.hardcasecrime.com/)

They publish novels from some of the best crime writers ever and the covers are done in the style of the old 50s to early 60s pulp-fiction novels.

i read a lot when i can, usually at least right before i fall asleep. Any of you classic literature nuts should pick up Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series. It's sort of like monty python mixed with harry potter and classic literature i suppose. Very very funny, set in a world where the characters in literature are real and book jumping is natural.

I really like Michael Chrichton because I feel like I come away from each of his books knowing more than I did before, and also Stephen King's mystical type books that aren't horror (The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption)

Does anyone else have any books they recently read or could recommend?

outside of my magazine subscriptions, i have not read much of anything of substance recently. the last book i read was "exit wounds" by j.a.jance, and i enjoyed it. murder/mystery/whodunit, but still enjoyable. the one before that was john walsh's book "public enemies", non-fiction, written by the guy that hosts 'america's most wanted' TV show.

i've got mega books, but no time to read. i could spend less time on the internet...
