NJDMV!!!!!
The wifey took my Trans Am to inspection today.
They failed it because of "modified exhaust/ too loud."
That is ******* ********!!!!!
Loudmouth cat back is completely legal.
F U NJ DMV!!!!!
So..... anyone know where I can go for inspection? It passes emissions..... and retains ALL emissions related parts. It just has a cat back on it.

I even did the low cut shirt and got an older gentleman (nice guy, 40s or 50s). He revved it a lot...figured he enjoyed the car. Then I get "Failed for Modified Exhaust and too loud." But then he says (different guy) that it shouldn't have failed for too loud, but it is still modified.
But it passed emissions with flying colors since all they do now is the OBD test. Oh well.

Wayne.
But the rejection already says modified/loud exhaust. They're gonna see no changes and still fail it.

I would just rip that failed sticker off and try again in another town.
Either that or just pay the $60-$80 & take it to a private place and pass legitimately.

i have a few things i'll fail for so i can't have it inspected before i go to school
now my dad's going to be an *** and take it off insurance out of paranoia :-x
(i still think it's retarded we can't say azz, they can say it on cable so it's not saving anyone from being exposed to it)

When I ordered my Loud Mouth 2, I asked SLP if they ever had any complaints from customers about it not passing inspection. They said no, but that they've gotten many for the regular Loud Mouth.

get documentation from SLP. go to regional DMV center (eatontown, trenton, deptford), show docs to person at desk, ask where to go in order to get your "LEGAL" exhaust system passed. they should be able to handle everything for you right there, including a new inspection sticker.

That is crap! The person that made this decision was just being a *******. My LM1 has passed 3 times at the Freehold Insp. Station. Actually just went through at the end of July with no problems. It's really sad, but most the people that work at these stations don't have a clue about cars to begin with.

Click this link to SLP's site:
http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=31042A
Then click on "instructions" on the side bar to the left. The 3rd page of this PDF explains the design and legality of the system. The following statement is included:
Only actual laboratory decibel measurements are a fair measurement of a muffler’s effectiveness to quiet exhaust and should be required and completed to judge an exhaust system. Most jurisdictions do not have the ability to measure noise levels accurately. The testing is very subjective if not properly and accurately completed.

if you have the DOT sticker and information you can go back to them about it. you can also point out that "too loud" is not a subjective standard that they can jsut raise whenever they want.
"too loud" is legally defined as 90db under partial load in an open area. there is a proper test procedure for it an everything.
if you don't have the DOT docs adn sticker anymore, jsut call SLP, i am sure they will be happy to provide them.

I failed multiple times for my magnaflow.
That last quote is fairy tale, nice to believe but not true... I called to *****, and was told that "the exhaust being too loud is up to the inspector's discretion"
I just kept going to different ones... ridgewood turned me down even with the paperwork from Magnaflow... finally I got some kid at one of the stations, aid to him "hereI failed before, they told me to come back with this paperwork and I'd be fine," showed him the paperwork and passed.
edit: Tim, show me the law wwhere it says 90 dB.... cuz I had my town's cops pouring over every single book to find a legal limit, and they found nothing

the federal highway limit, which is the guideline used in new jersey, is 90db. trust me, it is way louder than you think and not up to subjective enforcement.
foff667 will remember this one. my 1991 Camaro RS, LO3, headers, !cat, and borla with the open plate. i picked up the same sound pressure meter that the NHRA uses to enforce their db limit only to find out that doing the test completely wrong i couldn't get my car over the limit. holding the meter about 6 inches from the tail pipe and rev'ing to to 5k barely hit 80db.
kasey, i will find the law and get you a copy. it is a fun weapon to have when power trip nitwits try to bust you. i can't tell you the number fo times i got uled over for noise. best part is, i didn't ever get asked a single time about the slicks adn skinnies i drove around on for 2 years. lol

I really don't understand how they can measure the db of an exhaust system in an open cinderblock building; it's like a long tunnel! "Hello...hellooo! Echo...echooo!" They should take it outside to do the volume check. Pure BS, IMO. You might have to try a local shop and pay the $$.

Very cool that you found this but I dont think printing it out on regular papaer will cut it at the inspection. At least the statute numbers are staed and you can force them to get a copy AND make them actually measure using the correct methods. Great find man! Where do you find all this?

now, remember, , those are the federal guidelines, which no one really pays attention to because they all think they have the magic number. in NJ it's 95, regardless of the car. and they have to prove it with an SAE test in order to fail you. it's not this subjective 'ear of the inspector' anymore.
as for not accepting a printout from the internet, that's why i included the statute numbers. what do they want, a copy from a lawbook? tell them to take their *** down to the law library, then. there's an extensive one in echelon, right by the mall.

it's a shame that it's come to this, but if you have a modified car then you're best bet is to take it to your uncle's sister's best friend's father's cousin in order to get it passed. as long as they aren't passing cars that are unsafe or grossly spewing fumes into the atmosphere, then i have to say that i agree with it.
it's either that or never, ever modify your car. or, modify it, but then you can't drive it on the street. that little inspection sticker on the windshield means so much to the cops around here that i wouldn't even think about driving without one. they actually set up in a small town close to me, on the state highway (route 9) and check your sticker as you roll by (much slower than the speed limit, natch). all in the name of revenue generation.

Been there and done that last May as I tried to explain to Demonicbird last month on here..
If the inspection station doesnt have a d.b. meter they can not fail you because they have no proof or evidence of your exhaust d.b. level..
My car has a cam/heads QTP headers and Loudmouth 1 and they failed me..
I printed that out and after 2 minutes of debate with the inspection station manager they passed me through with a sticker because the station didnt even have a d.b. meter...
