Not sure whether to go to a 6sp or get the 4l60e rebuilt cause its about had it.
it depends what you plan on doing with the car. auto x or just cruising, go with the 6 speed. drag racing, auto all the way.

The car will see the track every once and a while, most of it will be street cruises/car shows.

i say stay auto, dont hack up the car, and if its a pleasure car, relax and enjoy no shifting :)

6 speed. its worth the hassle.
i give you my advice now: stock t56s have weak shift forks. get a trans from sixspeedsinc.com and it will take anything you throw at it. as for clutches, if you break in a clutch right, it should last you. not to mention, there are great clutches out there that can hold up to abuse better than the specs that crap out all the time. like the ls7 being the milder of the bunch or the textrialia or mcleoud being the higher end. do it right the first time and save money. thats the only way to it. that and get a nice poly trans mount and you have a killer trans thats fun and can take abuse

Is this for the 98? If so, go T56, because I'll have everything you need for the swap except the trans itself ready in a few weeks. Even the stock clutch.

yeah but now your talking over 1k per clutch for however long you own the car....and guess what, they still crap out....people on tech have been having problems with textrailia's dragging on the flywheel, killing the clutch and transmission

I'm in the same boat as you, a busted 4l60e so switching over crossed my mind. The cost was the main factor I decided to stay auto.

The old 3200 stall put a smile on my face....
The built tranny made me happy
The 4200 stall is stooooooopid silly :)

thats a worst case scenario. i have 10k on my spec 3 and its still going. i was careful on break in and i beat on it now. my next clutch will be a ls7. 400 for a clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel and can handle well over 400whp with stock pedal feel. shoot, i'm convinced :)

My dream car is a second gennie Camaro with a fuel injected stroker, Corvette rear and a six speed! If I had the dough and was building a pleasure car, I'd go six speed all the way.

even if its a dedicated track car still go with manual... driving an auto car down the quarter is probably one of the more boring things i could think of doing at the track... 3 pedals is easy, 2 is laughable
I vote 6-speed. I mean heck you already got the other car for an auto!
Why not have some fun with this one!

What ever i decide it will be done right and done this winter, cutting the floor is no big deal for me i can do it so it looks factory, along with the firewall, i just have to decide whether i want to build up this tranny or just spend a little more and get a built t-56. The other thing is i really need to get this motor rebuilt soon she's got 111xxx miles on her but when i gets rebuilt im going to do heads and a mild cam but since the 86 is getting tubbed this winter($7000) its going to be hard to come up with the money to rebuild the motor while i pull the tranny.

Very true, the 86 is going to be one nasty piece, ill probably have a full manual valve body 700r4 in there. And nothing beats throwing it down a gear when coming up to a light.

cody- to heck with the ls1. save up some money for a ls2/l92 combo. they are proven to make crazy hp and torque. put in a t56, drive you're engine to the ground with whatever cam you plan, and then get a gangster engine :)
my spec 3 had just over 10k on it, and i broke it in properly.........

but mike, can you at least agree that a spec isn't exactly known for being the longest lasting clutch out there? isnt there better out there? granted its hit or miss, but what isn't?

i fully agree, but i dont agree with having to spend over 1k to get one of them. unless you can tell me they will last 25k miles plus and anything i throw at it on the track

ok, now you're just being picky... lol
thats like melissa demanding an indestructible car. its not happening.
i know, she destructed mine.....
honestly, i think im gonna give spec one more try with either a stage 3+ or a stage 4

why? you don't like the ls7?
any feedback on its capabilitys in an amost all drag racing situation?
im not too worried about steet manners, it will be mostly trailered, and only driven to meets and cruise nights

oh then forget it. lol. sorry for the hijack.
i know the ls7 is gonna be the next big thing for modded street cars, but i dont know how its gonna 60foot since it is obviously an oem clutch designed (i know to handle the z06) but for drivability and comfort

Well it looks like i will go the six speed route, anyone have any cores laying around that have good gears and such so i can have it rebuilt?

do you intend to race it or jsut cruise it? for drag racing an auto is the quick way around 99 times out of 100. for cruising and general driving enjoyment, i woudl say the M6 would be a lot more fun to have.

Its going to see more cruise time than track time, maybe once or twice a month ill take it to the track but my 86 is going to be the track car.

I would say the m6 for the street...
as for this, you must have never driven a fast careven if its a dedicated track car still go with manual... driving an auto car down the quarter is probably one of the more boring things i could think of doing at the track... 3 pedals is easy, 2 is laughable

eh...i'd rather have a 9 second 3 pedal car over a comperable auto anyday, theres plenty of single digit manuals
i see your argument, i've driven an 11 sec. ls1 car and it was stab and go, it was a lot of fun, but not overly

I voted auto......A stage 3 Rossler 4L60, and 4400 Vigalante sit in the T/A, so I'm biased :) I drive it on the weekends since I have the vette for a DD.

yeah, but would you rather tach it to 4400 and stab and go, or dump the 3rd pedal at 7 grand like brando says?
