ok. Tomorrow my Pacesetter LTs and ORY should be showing up (UPS online says so). As most of you know i only have one usable hand right now and i need to get these put on. I was planning on waiting until my hand was better (about 8-10 weeks more) and doing it myself. Problem is that my car is going to the a shop for work and a tune and I NEED these headers installed before then. Now, under normal cicumstances id pay a shop but due to my hand being the way it is i havent been to work in 3 weeks and im flat broke for the time being.
All in all, im asking for a favor. im hoping somebody or a few guys could help me out. of course, id lend my one good hand since i DO actually wanna be involved in this.
STIPULATIONS...
* I cant drive too far sicne driving is extremely difficult wiht my hand like this
*Has to be done sometime this weekend or next week
*I have no work or school currently so im free anytime
* Possible to have a small get-together at my house, ill buy beer and snacks and we could chill while we do this.
*** if need be, ill drive to you but thats a last resort***
* I have no jackstands or a jack since everything i own is in the Trans am in Long Island.
Thanks,
-Adam
P.s. THis is for the 01 SS for those that dont kno

i'd be there in a heartbeat, as i believe in the "help a brother out" program with cars. it's a circle, and eventually it will be your turn to get help. however, piscataway is out of the question as far as driving for me. my back would lock up before i got there and then i'd be no help to anyone other than handing wrenches/sockets/tools to those working on the car.
let me know if the gig moves a little closer to me (toms river area).

"we could just put u on a creeper and roll u around" -- j3w's response
wayfast how tall are your jackstands, because to do headers and a ypipe you will need the car about 3 feet off the ground
you will also want to have:
sawzall
full metric socket and box wrench set
some prybars to make tight areas a litle wider after the headers are in
air tools would be a huge help with the exhaust
you also may want to do plugs and wires while the manifolds are off

for those PITA bolts haha

And to separate your stock y-pipe from the exhaust. I'd also have a filter & oil aside just in case.

well, my buddy mikes whos helping me has a sawzall, ill tell him to bring it, if for watever reason we need it. He has an impact gun too so that might come in handy. I sprayed all the bolts this evening with pb blaster so maybe thatll help a bit...
any other tips?

isnt it all bolts? why would i need to cut that?
and pepboys is only a few blocks from my house so ill get that if need be
your gonna have to cut it if you dont get the car high enough to wiggle the y-pipe out....i had mine ABOUT 3 and a half feet up in the air, and didnt have to cut,
you also may have to cut the intermediate pipe on the catback because the ory is probably longer than the stock y

dammit.. every write up i read about pacesetters didnt mention that.. im hoping i wont have to
i did, but i have the old style pacesetters.
i would come up and help out, but i work weekends, if it turns into somthing that has to get done on a monday-wednesday morning, pm me.
you DEFINATLY want to do plugs while the manifolds are out of the way unless they have been done recently. and you might as well do oil, fuelfilter and etc maintnence while its in the air

*Put dipstick tube back in
the bad news is yesterday i went back to the Doctors and now im in a real cast so progress is really slow.

ok.. good news bad news
good news.
y-pipe went on and car was awesome.
bad news.
On the way to the summerset patriots game the driver side header gasket blew out.
so now my question.. where can i get gaskets? do i have to order them? i need them pretty quickly. ALso, can i just unbolt the header, slip out the old gasket and slide in the new one?
12secondv6
09-13-2007, 09:02 PM
Well.... I don't know v8 header gaskets... but on my v6 I could just loosen the bolts, slide the gasket out and slide a new one in.
I hope that helps a bit
how the hell did you blow out a gasket? and yea you can just unbolt it and slip the new gasket in
qwikz28
09-14-2007, 09:34 AM
it probably wasn't on correctly when you installed it. loosen it, slip in a new one.
ps- gm header gaskets are the best. just go to a dealer

just for the record i did not.. i repeat.. i DID NOT install the passanger side header and gasket. that was done when i wasnt there.

get the aluminum ones and some lockin header bolts. when i ahd the headers on my 83, every oil change i had to retighten the bolts

09-15-2007, 09:35 AM
On my 96 SS I blew out a gasket and had to disconnect the y-pipe again to get the header to line back up properly after putting in the new gasket. If you're lucky you can just unbolt it and slide the old one out and new one in but be prepared to loosen everything back up if the header bolts don't go straight back in.

gaskets went out on me because some of the bolts weren't tight enough. They would work their way loose. Picked up some OE gaskets and got a proper bolt set (hooker bolts sucked) and monkey tightened them. No leaks since. Good luck.
