I found this on Wikipedia:
On Aug. 17, 2007, a rumor surfaced that the 2008/2009 Challenger SRT will, in fact, be powered by a 7.0L hemi engine - marking the return not only of the Challenger marquee, but also of a 426 cubic inch displacement engine. The engine reportedly will be based (loosely based) on the current hemi engines, but will feature four valves per cylinder with dual-independent variable cam timing. Reportedly, this step was needed to best the Chevrolet LS7 engine, which is slated for the 2009 Camaro redux. Performance figures for the 7.0L hemi have not been disclosed yet.

If true, I might guess it will be priced like an entry vette. I believe it was going to be more then a camaro all long.

Engine's gonna need some power to move that tank around.

Agreed. I think it will be more of a status symbol than the vette though. I mean I think I last read that it was going to be 4200 lbs. That's a beasst. I hope they don't make the same mistake as the GT500 though. I mean, with 500 hp it runs 12.8ish? that's ridiculous!!!

Mopar will be doing a limited COPO type custom order Challenger with your choice of either a 392/525HP hemi, 392/650HP hemi, or a 426 hemi. I'm sure those motors can move that car along nicely :D

well Saleen is heavely considering making a version of the new Camaro that is supposed to make 600 or more hp....so lets hope they decide to do it

I laugh at my friends that tell me they are going to by a hemi challenger. I think they are going to just as rare and to expensive for a 20 something year old to own.

if they pull down enough for the monthly payment, assuming they can make the down payment (20% cash and/or trade), there is no way in hell they will afford the insurance. remember, it's gonna be a 2 door. welcome to corvette-land.

these are shots of the Challenger at a preproduction launch for the Challenger for dealers, along with a ton of other 09 products from Dodge.
They got to sit into a few preproduction versions, and it will come with a t-56 6spd manual, but the SRT8 will get only the 5spd auto with the 6.1.
Rumors of a 6.4 are out, but nothing bigger then that for right now.
The Challenger is going to be much bigger then the Camaro or Mustang, and that means weight as well.

The production car looks great. Very close to the concept. Just curious to see what changes were made to the interior. I heard somewhere the Challenger would be out by Feb. 2008. Anyone know for sure when the car is due?

With the BS going on at Chrysler I'd be surprised if a factory 7.0L engine ever sees the light of day.

and even if they do make a challenger with a motor that big, hardly anyone is gonna buy it because it will be $45K and have stupid mandatory options like navigation, heated leather seats and it will only come with an auto trans.

why would it only come with an auto? any specific reason
Anti_Rice_Guy
10-16-2007, 08:11 PM
auto is easier to build stronger. And not many people buy sticks anymore. That's why companies are pushing the manumatic thingies

Dodge said when they annoucned this thing they intend to make it a low production vehicle (<10k cars). Of course that could change, but that is what they said at the time.

They said the same thing about the Viper to get the hype nice and strong. For 2-3 years there were waiting lists and they were selling for double the MSRP. Now they will make as many as they can sell, and they still sell over list price.

Yea, but I would still consider them fairly limited production. In the last year or so I've seen more C6 Z06's on the road then Vipers of any year.

The Challenger is definatly better looking than the Camaro... That being said I'm still a GM guy. Honestly just the LS2 in the Camaro doesnt do it for me. I'd much rather get myself a nice 06 GTO with an LS2 for half the price, throw a $5000 SLP kit in it and have myself a low 11's 550hp car for still half the price of a 13's new Camaro.
Redesign the 440 or bust on that Challenger though.

New Camaro will get LS3 I might think. LS2 will be old news by then.

You may be right, but I also think alot of the ZO6s on the road are clones. It's a bit harder to clone a Viper.

I've seen stock c6s with z06 wheels but never with badges/engine swaps. I think it's just because the Z06s are so much cheaper and more practical than vipers.

Mopar will probly put the viper motor in the challenger and call it another SRT-10
BigAls87Z28

The Viper motor, while redone, will not last too much longer. They are finally getting the HP they should have gotten out of it, but the car has some trouble putting it down. Even in recent comparos of the new 600hp Viper SRT10 to the Z06, the Z06 is still VERY close despite the 95hp difference.
There are talks and rumors of a Hemi V10, smaller displacement then the 8.4, that will make the 600hp mark easy. I also hear that Ford is developing its own 7.0 liter, called the 777. 7 liters, 700hp, 700ftbs....no supercharger. Add one more 7 in there...7 gallons per mile.(yes I said that right). One more 7, 7 second powertrain warranty.
Anyway, Challenger will not get the V10, it wont ever be certified with any other car outside of the Viper. It gets crappy gas milage in a 3300lb super car, couldnt imagine in a 2 ton sports-tank..err...coupe.
Camaro's workhorse V8 engine will be the LS3, but with recent developments, it seems that GM might launch a direct injected engine, which was recently shown at GM Powertrain's debut of several technologies. The DI small block was overshadowed by twomode hyrbid sedans, hyrdogen vehicles, and other fuel saving technology. The DI Small Block was the L92 that was sitting in an Escalade, that made "well above 450hp" in the 'Slade. Thats right, a 460-480hp Escalade!! Its already one of, if not the fastest full size SUV's out there on the market without the help of turbo's!
In the article, an interview with a GM Powertrain rep said that they would like to launch this Gen V engine in a highly visible vehicle, like Camaro.

as always i am impressed with your extensive knowledge and ability to put it down so coherently....but ya a 700 horspower ford with no boost adders?! I'll believe it when i see it....
