it's been 40 years or so since i put one together. i don't remember ever brushing paint on the body, as in the cars were usually the proper color. i have a model that i want to start putting together, but the body and most of the parts that are going to get painted are in a 'primer gray' color. they have a semi-gloss sheen to them, which means any part that gets painted will have to be sanded first.

my question is, should i use a primer after sanding and before the color layer?

When I put those models together I used to just scuff the parts up and spray primer on and then airbrushed the color on the body parts.

I always wash them in Windex & warm water first before I do anything else.

Wash the body in warm water, use a very fine grit sand paper and scuff the body up just a little, soak the spray cans of paint and primer in warm water, prime the body, then apply your base color and top color.

1.wash all parts in warmwater with a drop of dishsoap.
2.spray the parts with a light coat of primer
3.spray light coat of color
4.let it dry a day or two.
5.mist spray another coat
6.wet sand(use water with a drop of dishsoap)
7.repeat 3-6 untill satisfied
