Ok, so I'm wandering through the for sale/ wanted threads looking for cheap LT1 parts and I came across a thread where a guy is paying $130 per pair or $65 each for factory LS1 LT1 GM cats and also pay's money for non LS1/ LT1 cats.
I thought it was quite odd and a load of BS....... but read the attached threads. LOTS of satisfied people!
I think I have the cat off the wife's elantra laying around so I plan on contacting him.

and he is here too:

I bet there is a bunch of people on the board that have stock cat's laying around somewhere.
I just wanted to spread the info so others benifit - I don't know the guy..... but easy money is nice :)

hes recycling the platinum out of it. which is rather illegal, unless hes somehow stripping them himself. most time, junkyards wont even sell you a cat, used new or anything. its illegal for them to do so. so hes either doing it himself, or hes going through the backdoor somehow. i forgot the exact number, but i think the stuff inside the cat is worth around 500 maybe?

if he is an inspector for the DOT you will have a problem - if he tells you in a round about way it is illegal than do not do it -- jz

there's platinum inside the cat? no wonder they cost so much. here i was thinking they must be dipping them in gold, but it turns out to be platinum...

Yep when broken down theres a few metals in cat's worth a pretty penny at the scrap yard. I heard stories on the 4x4 forums of epople in CA going around with sawzalls to toyotas because they are worth about $150 not broken down.
PS: Will he take my longhaired cat?

I thought this thread was about cats. I wondered to myself, "how in the world can I make money from an old cat??!"
...give me a break; it's been a long week,... and its only Wednesday.
Besides, I have a first gen. What do I know about cats.

Illegal?? Why? If they are bad used Catts then who the hell cares?

There is platinum in a catalytic converter, which is why they are valuable. Be careful in dealing with them since some people are allergic to platinum (which is also why you should be careful if you are hollowing out your cat).

it's illegal to tamper with a working one, so what's to stop someone from busting up a good one and saying it wasn't working?

Just to make it simple:
Dicking around with anything emissions related is illegal. The only time you can is to replace something that is malfunctioning, and even then it has to be an OEM spec part.

its illegal because of some kind of EPA regulation, or something to that matter. im sure it has to do with the environment, pollution, anything along that matter.
