I am rebuilding my suspension. I am considering replacing the 21 year old springs with Moog type oem. I was also considering lowering my car 1 inch. I don't want to make my car handle like the ultimate racer. Just really after the looks. I also dont want to sacrifce the ride since my goal is to make a cruiser. If I cut off 1/4 to 1/2 of coil, will I change the rate? Would I be better off buying lowering springs?

if you cut coils...you pretty much screw everything up. do it right and get springs meant to lower the car. it will ride like **** if you cut the coils.

Buy the lowering springs, it's well worth it.

If you cut a coil it won't sit as it should in the pocket. The last coil in a spring is flat so the contact is proper.

Take a look at these:

See how the last coil is flat, but the one above it is on an angle? If you cut it there will be a lot of pressure on a very small area.

Lowering springs are your best bet, as above.
