they're not as unreliable as people think. just do some repairs yourself, especially those little stuff like buttons.

don't forget to check for the headliner by the window, its a sign on future problems if there are water marks. cooling problems, drivetrain noises, and of course the clutch

Awesome cars. I had a '98 and an '01. I put over 200k miles on the '98 and never had any problems except the routine maintenance stuff and that stupid computer screen thing goes out like every six months and they're like $800 to replace each time. Make sure you get the service history on the car and find out when the cat was replaced ($1800), front brakes ($600), front suspension ($2200), and Maintenance 1 inspection ($600), and the Maintenance 2 inspection ($850). The maintenance inspections are due like every 5k miles or so and you do the #1, then 5k miles later you do the #2, then 5k later back to #1, etc.. I took great care of both of mine and I was averaging $2000 every three months per car for maintenance so be ready for that bill

PS - If you expect to survive as a BMW owner, you better start calling them "Bimmers" and not "Beamers". BMW guys will tear you a new one for that.

Just remember that in probably 997 of 1000 cases all replacement parts should come from BMW, atleast if you want ones that work & fit right. Especially brakes, unless you like noise. And every broke job = pads, rotors, sensors.

I love driving 5-series BMWs. I would probably never own an older one.

To each their own...nice car I guess. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole but that's just my opinion. I do like the CI's though, probably the only one I'd buy. I guess you can start acting like a pompous ******* if you get one. :D

Just do the world a favor, don't act like it's a M3...it seems like everyone that has a CI thinks it's a M3 and drives it like they're Michael Shumacher lol

not my cup of tea, I like Mercedes better, they feel like they are worth more for the money IMO. I drive BMW's all the time through work and they all seem too similar to me as far as style and looks. But to each their own. Oh yea, make sure you get a BMW jacket and hat for when you drive, I see that too often too with the owners of these cars

not bad, i could drive that. german, england, maaaaybe italy are the only import cars id ever drive. thats alot of miles, and even though im sure the build quality is excellent, like everyone said, the maintenance is way too high for a regular guy. yuppies who cant change their own oil dont mind 2K every few months. conversely, you could get a nice caddy (comparing bmw luxury vs. US luxury) and not put a dime into it, other then usual maintenance, for the next 5yrs or 100K miles.

Hey wait a minute, I thought Corvette owners were the only douche's that were privileged enough to have a jacket and a hat. BASTARDS!:rofl:

You obviously dont work in the auto service industry.
BMW, as well as MB and pretty much every other luxury car owner look like lost puppies when I tell them how much it is to fix simple things like brakes, replace tires or oil changes. "Why so expensive?"
I just yell into thier face "ITS A BMW DBAG!!" as I slam thier face into the hood.

I love BMW cars and they way they drive. I like the older basic style of the 7 and 5 seires. No real flare, just a typical German machine. Zero sex appeal, just driving performance. Now, they have "flame surface" design which is not so nice. The nicest looking BMW out there now is the 3 series coupe. Everything else looks cheap, fat, or both.
The 3 series sedan looks like it has plastic door pannels.
the 5 series drag-queen like eye liner headlights are fugly, and its Bangle pouch truck design is fugly.
By far is the tubby looking 7 series is the worst, and so by chance the first of the Bangle designs. The 1 series looks like a midget 3 series, and thats not a good thing. Its greenhouse is about the size of the 3, but is on a car the size of a Solstice. Like a big head on alittle body.

MB is starting to take the lead in German car design, thanks to the Italian designed CLS and how its design language has translated to the new S, CL, and C class.

The new C-class is gorgeous.

its very nice on the outside, but its interior is a let down. When compared to other cars in its class, it looks cheap.
If I had to get a luxury sedan, CTS is the winner.

I agree with you Al on the new BMW cars, but I still like the looks of the 6-series. I think thats the nicest one out there right now. Too bad they're so expensive.
