CORNELIUS, N.C. — The two sons of Top Fuel drag racer Doug Herbert were killed Saturday in a traffic accident near their home, officials said.

A statement from Herbert's team said sons Jon, 17, and James, 12, died instantly when the car they were riding in collided with another vehicle in the town of Cornelius, which is 20 miles north of Charlotte.

Cornelius police said in a statement that the Mazda which Herbert's children were in attempted to pass a third car when it went out of control and collided with a Hummer. Police said the unidentified driver of the Hummer was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center, while a passenger in the car was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The extent of their injuries was not available Saturday evening.

Herbert team spokeswoman Lisa Powers said Herbert was in Phoenix, Arizona, for preseason testing and was returning home to be with his family, which includes his 9-year-old daughter, Jessica.

Funeral arrangements are pending, but the family asks that in lieu of flowers, people make donations to the Speedway Children's Charities in Jon and James Herbert's name.

Man, that sux! :( Doug is a REAL cool guy, I've bought parts from his perf business, and actually spoke with him on the phone. He even went out of his way to send me a bunch of autographed pics for me n' my boys. And his father Chet is one of the orig. big dads of hot rodding. Chet is a genius with camshafts, and even though he was confined to a wheelchair in the 40s due to polio it never kept him from being a true legend. Please keep Doug and his family in your prayers, I know I will.

He's hoping to win the Top Fuel Championship "For My Boys", and reach out to teens to drive safe.

Its going to be an uphill climb, but with Bazemore gone, Troxel in funny car, Milican missing, Grubnic with no sponsor, JR having to now use Lucas' old car after totalling his new one in qualifying, having a new crew, and being able to now run 90% nitro, I'd say he has a better shot than last year. The big hurdles are getting by the consistent teams like Schumacher, Dixon, Fuller, and Bernstien, and having a distinct disadvantage having a much larger and heavier car. He still hasnt been able to find the big power either. I'm pulling for him personally, and he needs to take advantage of the other teams problems right now and get some points early in the season. The last thing you want to have to do is chase down Schumacher or Dixon in the early summer.
