Was the NA 427 good or bad? Why go supercharged, the mustang?

The original engine for the ZR1 was a twin turbo set up, but there were reliability and cost issues. When Eaton came out with its brand new 4 rotor design, GM snagged it up as it gave the same effency as a turbo with no lag. Its compact design was also worked out well for keeping weight down.
Ahahahah, nothing the Mustang does scares the Vette team. Mustang GT500 can barely keep up with a LS2 C6....not to mention the new LS3.
The LS7 will be replaced with the LSA, a ligher duty version of teh LS9. The LS7 is very costly to produce. CTS-V has the LSA, and the Camaro is likely to get one too.
and yes, this car has been out in the news for a while.

So the 427 was a one year dud?
still a 427, just a different name and with different induction.
umm i think they used somthing smaller 6.2 or somthing ian

The Z06 uses the LS7 a 7.0 (427) Gen IV n/a engine that makes 505hp
the ZR1 uses the LS9 a 6.2 Gen IV with a brand new Eaton 4 rotor supercharger with intergral intercooler(thats what you see in the window)
427 was fine, but with its high compression ratio, its not exactly supercharger friendly. The LS9 got a lot of the LS7's pricey parts like titanium rods and valves, etc, and can safely make over 620hp with a warranty.
Corvette might take on a Porsche 911 type system where they have different levels of performance. Think GT2/GT3 vs Z06/ZR1 type stuff.

No its not but I believe it will be discontinued by 2010, to much money to make, but is a great 11 sec crate motor but a costly one.

Isn't the same plant that's builds the LS7 also building the LS9?

Correct, the LS9 is hand built in Wixom.

And they wanted to boast about 100 hp/L. Not kidding.

LS9 makes 100hp per liter too...
And they wanted to boast about 100 hp/L. Not kidding.
i possibly misread/interperutted this wrong, but when did the 7.0L LS7 make 700hp?...

Sorry guys, quoted the wrong person. I was talking about the LS9 being 100hp/L, not the LS7.
also....how can a car in its 3rd model year be a one year dud?

nothing the Mustang does scares the Vette team.
The new Saleen motor thats coming out next month is pretty sick. 5.0L, supercharged, twin intercooled, forged internals, fully ported heads, 620HP/600TQ....... on 5 pounds of boost.

Whoaaaaaa..all that work, and coming right there with teh ZR1. Add the additional weight of all that, putting the Mustang at over 2 tons like the GT500KR, and you have a heavy tank.
I thought the CTS-V was a LS2?
New CTS-V based on the new CTS is giong to be equiped with a 550hp LSA

Lets see...hand built by master engine techs, titanium connectic rods, forged crank and pistions, all aluminum block, CNC ported heads, titantium valves, dry sump oiling system, and when equiped with a 6spd manual, can possibly achieve 25mpg....
Nuts? Yeah, taht engine is pretty nuts.

nah, its supposed to weigh in at just 3480lbs. It should be pretty quick. Its also coming with a 4:10 posi rear, 6-speed trans, lightweight body panels, the same suspension and brake components as the S7, carbon fiber interior and exterior components, and the rep said that the motor will be built to handle the power of a pulley change and should stand up to over 700hp with no problems. Not saying its a better car, but pretty damn impressive for a pony car.
