I have a Weatherby Pump 12 gauge with a 22 inch long barrel. You need the longer barrel if it is just used for Trap. The Skeet barrel should be shorter if your going to use it for ONLY that, since most of your shooting will be over your head.

I have quite a few shot guns between me and my father my favorite is my benelli super sport 2 but my dad has a beretta silver pigeon 2 over under that is simply amazing as well but ive only shot it a handful of times... but those are top of the line guns ie 1500+ each for a beginner gun id suggest something like a mossburg 500 or rem. 870 or one step up from that would be a benelli nova which i have as well and like a lot for a pump.. i prefer over unders/side by sides and semi auto's though

What is your price range? I bought my 20GA Stoeger Condor for 300 dollars at Dicks Sporting goods. Its an over/under so it will only hold two rounds but is reliable as hell (Has few moving parts as opposed to pump). The barrel is a litle short for skeet but I like it and do better with it than anyone I shoot with. I also use my LC Smith 12ga side by side everynow and than but not for long cuz it is from like the 1940's or so. Not much padding in the stock. My buddy uses a 12 pump and 20 pump they always jam when we go out. Not all pumps are that bad he just got bad luck of the draw with them I think. Just some thing to consider.

Lately I've been reading shotgun wise, that you can pick up used Police Issues Remington 870's & Mossberg 500's for a song & a dance. The money you save on buying a used one, you can send them out to be refurbished with new plastics and get back a practically brand new shotgun for half the cost.

Alex, any idea where you can pick the used ones up?

IMHO Mossy 500s suck. I have yet to see one that doesn't spit shells out of the feed tube onto the ground when racking the slide. I would say for an entry level shottie (you don't want a rifle to shoot trap fyi) an 870 would be good one, the Benelli Novas are very good too and not too expensive. A Benelli Super Sport would be ideal but idk if you wanna drop 1200 on a shotgun, but they are amazing guns.

If you want a rifle I would say, HONESTLY, get an AR. A lot of people are probly gonna say geta Ruger 10/22, for good reason I might add, but I don't think so. My reasoning is, you wanna start out with a small caliber cheap round. It will hone your skills get you used to recoil and won't break your bank. A conventional AR shoots .223 or 5.56mm cartridges which are .22lr rounds on steroids. these are going up in price now because of the military operations all over the world tho. Now to fix that disadvantage you should get a .22lr upper receiver for your AR lower, it will allow you to plink using the cheaper and more plentiful ammo, then if you need more power (hunting/HD) switch back to .223/5.56 upper. You can also buy many other uppers, .308, .30-06, .45acp, .458SOCOM, 6.8SPC, 7.62x39mm, .50AE, .50 Beowulf, for any use you can think of so its very versitile and flexable. Plus with the current political climate who knows how much longer you will be allowed to purchase AR lowers, so get em now.

MHO YMMV

Look up used police shotgun, or shotgun police turn in, etc. Only thing I'd caution you about is they have an 18" bbl and cylindar (sp) bore so you need a new barrel @ least 28" and a modified choke @ least.

I've been talking about this for MONTHS!

It has to be within reasonable distance, and a range that accepts rifles, shotguns & pistols. We can have an extravaganza!

well for a south meet I know of an open range that accepts all of those
