went under the hatch to take out the interior pieces in the rear and this is what I found in spare compartment. sorry for the camera phone pics, my good one broke.
the brace that mounts the tire and jack is completely disconnected

this is the pile of rust
http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2579/rustpileww8.bmp
all in all the car only has 3 spots like that...the other 2 are the front of the floor pans
rest of todays progress before the rain hit

so it looks like I'll be doing tubs on it this summer. Any body know of a decent place to get them from?
wolfe has pretty good priced ones

Thats a common spot for water to hang out in thirdgens from my experience...
why are you tubbing it?

to repair/replace the rusted through sections and fit bigger balonies?

your going to need a little more motor before you need any tubbing. if thats the only rust, just cut it out and make a new patch panel.
Tru2Chevy
04-12-2008, 07:22 PM
Yea, I don't see any reason for tubs. There are thirdgens on 275 DRs going single digits, and they fit in the stock wheel wells just fine.

well why bother just replacing or patching the spot when I can upgrade. better to do tub it when I fix that spot than to do it twice.

Devil's Advocate says why spend the money to upgrade when what's there isn't hurting you at all, and most likely won't be for quite a long time (if ever).

cause when I find problems I like to try and fix them believe it or not. Just knowing its there bothers me. I have a donor that I might take that section from when I do if I don't do tubs. theres a lot that needs to be patched/replaced/installed, it would just be another thing on the list.

I'd do it now but I need to get the other car on the road, just waiting on the clutch, water pump and oil filter/sender housing. then I need to drop it in and put a new slave cylinder in.

why not...I have to cut the entire inner fender and 90% of the 1/4 is rusted. I might as well just do it now, because in time I plan to use it as a strictly track car. Hopefully on a trailer.

all you need to do to fit a decently wide tire is remove the bump stop and clearance the front of the wheel well. You dont need to touch the rear well at all.
or just do what i did:twisted:

 well there is a saying, nothing says success like excess, in this case its the Tubs, but on the other hand, excess and success comes in the form of money, it always does and always will. if you want to "fix it, just get some aluminum, or steel at home depot, pop rivet it on, cauck the inside of the seams, and under coat it, but if your looking to bite of more then you can chew, by all means do the tubs.....but first finish the brakes that go in the back

You have no need for them unless you plan on back-halving the car, and there are plenty of 3rd gens running single digits on stock style suspension. Do you plan on making the car that fast? If so, I expect to see some real tubs there, not just some pansy minitubs. Otherwise you'll just have to do them again when you back-halve the car and try to stick some monster meats under it.

people, just stop responding to this, cause your just gonna get the same automated answer from him saying he's gonna do it, but you know he's not gonna. If he was gonna do half the **** he says he's gonna do, it of been done already, but there are alot of things that prevent him from doing so, so Im not gonna hold my breath , nor really expect him to do this. The car will be sitting on jack stands just like his "other project" for quite a while.

Every day I've been busting my ass scraping cars, and parting out cars. ****s been slow the last 2 weeks so yea I've been home more, But I have 2 45ft Grumman box trucks to cut down and scrap a 86 suburban and possibly a few others. those to trucks both weigh 10k lbs and are mostly aluminum,I'm splitting the weight with my scrap partner and I'll make $2600 in 4 days, by april 24th I'll have over 6k in the bank just from this month. F U, pal.
Bubba,
Seriously. Don't mini tub or tub the car unless at least one of these things are true:
1.) You need (not WANT) the space.
2.) You will have most of the rear sheetmetal apart anyway
3.) You have the proper tools to do it right
4.) You have the time and/or money to do it right
Take it from me, replacing wheel wells is not fun. 86 T/A did a great job with his but I believe he will concur that it is not exactly "easy" to do.
In your case all you need to do is cut out the metal until you hit good stuff, then make a template out of cardboard to fit the hole in your metal. Transfer that template to sheet metal, cut it out of the metal, form with a torch, fit, weld, and paint. This is not that hard, I've done this a bunch of times on a number of cars. The price of this will be damn near nothing, and you can put the time and money into other parts of the car.

So the question is, if your really getting all this money, how are you goignto spend it/ wisely? poorly? If I were you ( and at this point and time he is goign to jsut read over this and not care) I would put a portion of that money to a DD car, sot hat way you can work on your Firebird, and not break stuff all the time, plus it'll have rear brakes. if you put all that money into your car you have now, your a dumber person then I thought. that car should be your hobby, not your main ride. you should do just like what the other half dozen or so of us said. clean the area, put a new piece on there, and keep driving.

the rust goes all the way though the 1/4 panel. so i'd need to replace that too. so I'm already in pretty deep. I figured while the car is non mobile I'll just upgrade what I can
