i was having a discussion the other day about inner city youth. it got started with the statement that common sense isn't so common these days. we wound up all over the place, but to keep it simple for here, it comes down to kids aren't being taught properly by their parents. why were they doing in excess of 100 mph on the Skyway, of all places?

probably because no one told them it was a bad idea.

think about that for a minute...

parents jusr plop their kids infront of a TV and tell them to watch while they do other things, now throw in video games! the kids never have human contact like going outside and riding a bike, now throw in racing games.... theres your 100mph on the skyway

Why should parents have to tell their kids it's not smart to do 100 mph?
IMO that's just dumb. if you need to be told that there's more wrong with you

that explains why there were 200 kids on my block last night having a service in the park across the street 2 of the kids lived around the corner from me, its a shame but anyone who has been on the skyway knows its not smooth enough to do 60 on forget about 100, esp where it connects to raymond blvd

Sad....hopefully the kids in the back learn a life lesson out of this. Its sad that the kids in front had to go like they did.

exactly my point. they don't have the frame of reference to know that 100 mph on the Skyway is a bad thing. there is so much wrong with these kids, and it all goes right back to the parents not having taught them properly from the beginning. like it was said, the TV-babysitter and then throw in video games and then these kids get their licenses and start hot rodding their cars. they think there is nothing wrong with 100 mph on the Skyway.

i'm just glad they didn't take out any innocents with them. also said in this thread, though quite harsh, what a way to clean out the gene pool...

since the problem is way larger than just this one accident, we don't know what these kids could've been with the proper guidance and guidelines. who knows, they could have contributed something to the world other than a headline that read "2 dead in Skyway accident".

I'm curious.

Why?
The driver of the vehicle was 17. He is still a minor. He was also in violation of the NJ provisional license he had. I could be wrong, but the 08 Solara probably wasnt purchased by him unless he paid for it cash being a minor cant sign a legal binding contract alone. The driver was also operating the car at 2AM or so. I dont know about you but when I have kids, until theyre 18 they will have rules and a curfew. Parents know what the provisional license restrictions are and are therefor liable. The situation sucks all around but whats done is done.

so the parents are held responsible for the child's free will?
you can give a kid a curfew all you want, but all it takes is one time and unless you're there with them you can't force them to be home at 12am on the dot
meanwhile, who said the kid had the car with permission?

Uhh, yeah. The parents are legally held liable for their childs actions hence why they are children. If youre a ****** parent you cant force them but that is another matter. This again goes back to the parents not keeping tabs on their underage child which again, they are legally responsible for. It all boils down to bad parenting.

At 17 if someone commits murder they're not going to charge the parents but are 10x more likely to charge that 17 year old as an adult.

In that instance yes the child maybe charged as an adult, but the parents will have to deal with a civil suit as well. Weather or not, or what statue a child will be charged has no bearing on the fact that unless the child is emancipated the parents are still LEGALLY responbible for them.

Im 19. My parents really wernt a big part of my life and after 15 they were almost non existent.
At 17 I still knew not to do 100 in a car with 3 other people PERIOD. If I were all alone and felt that the road was suitable to do an excess of 100 I still wouldnt do it unless it was an emergency.
More than likely these kids parents told them not to do such things before, but they chose not to listen. They could have been drinking, maybe trying to be cool but what ever it is they decided not to listen. Its far from the parents fault it really becomes more of a social draw to do stupid things that makes these kids think their cool.

That had to of been mommy or daddy's 2008 Toyota they destroyed. Theres no way my 17 year old kid would be out with my car that late.

the Pulaski Skyway carries four lanes of U.S. Route 1/9 for 3.5 miles (5.6 km) between the far east side of Newark and Tonnelle Circle in Jersey City, passing over Kearny.

You gotta realize he was just a kid (17) and should have used better judgement. Common sense should dictate ones actions but thats not always what happens. Unfortunately this kid used bad judgement and ended up paying the ultimate price. We've all done stupid **** in our lives and fortunately got away with it. Not everyone is as lucky. Feel bad for the friends and family of the lost ones, The two others better start goin to church cause they got lucky.
