Gotta ask a few people who have the ability to and willingness to come help me fix my rear right hub. 3 studs are broken off from my crappy ebay adapters. I got it parked before the wheel came off, and had it towed home. I need to get this car back on the road asap so I can continue to go to work. Now I dont know too many of you just yet but im a nice guy I promise. So who wants to lend a fellow fbody guy a hand??

I have a 4th gen rear. I attempted to tap the studs out of it but i guess you have to remove the hub to take out the studs because of whats behind it, looks like somekind of a gear. How do i go about taking the hub off?

There is no hub to remove, you have to take the axle out of the housing in order to get the old studs out and the new ones in.

If I were you I'd spend a few extra bucks and get good studs (like ARPs) since you're using the adapters. A little extra insurance is far better then ruining your car and maybe injuring yourself or others.

A local speed shop (if you have one) might have them - not sure about Napa / Autozone / Advanced Auto type places.

I will find out tom then. So how much labor exactly is involved with this kind of a job. I know the front would have been a 20 min job if i just changed the studs.

You have to free the axle from whatever brake assembly you are running, then pop off the rear differential cover, remove the C-clip from the axle you want to pull first, and then carefully slide the axle out of the differential housing, hammer out the 5 old studs, and replace them with the new.

Then reverse the process to put it back together, and do the other side. Always do just one side at a time - that way if you forget how something goes back together you can just look at the other side.

i donno but on my 4th gen, i took off the caliper and rotor, hit the studs out with a hammer, then used a stud installing tool and purred them on with a 1/2" impact gun. taking the axle out isn't necessary. there is a sweet spot and some finnesing involved but its doable. is it disc brakes or drum brakes on the axle? oh and did the studs brake off of the adapters or the axle?

Always do just one side at a time - that way if you forget how something goes back together you can just look at the other side.

Studs broke off the axle. It is a drum brake setup.
The 4th gen rear I have I thought was disc, has no brakes on it but has a gear behind the hub which wouldn't allow me to remove the studs from that rear anyway (maybe it was really a drum setup).
Either case I am purchasing the new studs sometime tomorrow. I def don't have the tools or know how to tackle this job alone tho.

Only means of transportation. Checked all the other wheels they didn't seem loose. Lets just say my 4th gen wheels will be sold soon the adapters in the trash and I will be running proper offset wheels for my car asap still need my studs fixed tho ;).

wait there is like an abs gear behind it? i don't know late fourth gen's, but it may be a traction control rear? does it have a caliper mount? if its drums i'm guessing it would be out of a v6 car.

sweetbmxrider im not really familiar with those rears but that gear is probally the abs or traction control. I was told it was out of a v8.

Front right wheel had the same problem about a week ago, had a new rotor with new studs put on. Everything worked fine for a few days.

My car has working drum brakes. The crappy wheel adapters may be risky but by no means am I intentionally putting others lives in danger.

Brakes do work, wheel adapters snapped off studs, something untill a few days ago hasnt ever happened, thought was fixed and have been checked everytime I got into the car.

Im sorry but yes this is my only means of transportation and im not in the best situation but im trying to make it with what iv got, so if I have to wake up every day and drive my car to work to try to get on my feet then I sure will.

On the rear? Bad idea. You can do a number on your differential like that.

jersey - i think you are looking at pulling the axle out from what i can decipher. i don't know how the gear comes off but maybe someone can chime in? and while you have it apart, and if it is possible, leave it off. i didn't know 4th gen rears came with traction controlled drum brakes. unless its out of something else...

A block of wood might help, but I would rather pull the axles. It's not much work, and it means that there is no way to hurt that differential.

I think his rear drum brakes are just the stock 3rd gen brakes mounted on a 4th gen replacement axle, am I right Jersey?

4th gen rear has no brakes on them at all. Gear is for traction control. Apperently it was disc. Its dark and havnt really payed to much attention to that rear since picking it up off another member.

I have drum brakes on the rear thats on my car now, stock 3rd gen rear.

Im just going to buy new studs so the 4th gen rear is out of the equation.

I need help with removing the axle to put the new studs on.

Ok, gotcha....I thought you already had the 4th gen rear in your car. Would make sense that you don't - hence the adapters @ all 4 corners.

Just finished tearing the rear drum apart and changing the rear studs! :) with out having to take the axle off either. Just had to remove the brake setup, and using a spacer behind the stud and some leverage so that i don't harm the bearings i banged the stud out. Will be doing the other side this weekend along with a new front passenger side rotor.

P.s. Currently looking for a good set of proper third gen offset wheels to sport untill i buy some skulte adapters too.
