Jim, I'd just make sure that the warranty isn't a PITA to claim on. I bought a machine from TD once and it was a total POS. Everything went within the span of 9 months. And when I say everything I mean it- from the case switch down to the CPU cooling fan and everything in between. I wonder if it was made out of spare parts or something.

Check out Newegg.com . They're in NJ so you have to pay tax, but you'll have the computer with in 2 to 3 days. I bought my last computer as a refurb from TD and didn't have any trouble with it. Also, I would stay with intel, theres no need for quad cores right now or really anytime in the future. I would go with an intel Core 2 Duo 6850 or something along those lines if you want a kick ass computer.

this doesn't look like it, and they claim it's a 2 year, in-house warranty - as in they come to my house to fix it. tell ya the truth, i don't need that kind of support, but it is nice to know they will swap out bad parts.

yeah, i checked them out already. they don't have anything for me. also, i'm and AMD man, and i've never seen any reason to change that. this is the thing: it's a quad core with 3GBs for $600 - where are you going to find that?

You have a point 3gigs of ram with a quadcore for 600 is a pretty damn good deal.

-not really i can guarantee the ram will be POS
-it is in a microtower so unless you have a box fan on it chances are very high it will over heat soon
-all truthe and honesty yeah I was a AMD fan boy for ever loved there s939 chips but intels C2D is a much more stable and better chip for the same price
-the ram config is bullshlt 2x1gb and 2x512mb you should never mix like that the 2x512 is going to bottle neck the pi$$ out of the machine and make it run slower then just the 2x1gb
- ATI RADEON HD2400 50.00 vid card most motherboards have better onboard hope you don't plan to do any gaming or video editing or anything that requires decent graphics(BTW runing vista on this will kill any type of speed you are hoping to get)
-now the biggest problem I see here is the fact that they are trying to run vista on a machine with only 300 watt power supply that is barley enough to run the components that they are including don't even bother trying to expand or upgrade or addon anything els. any decent machine that is capable of running vista requires min 500-600w power supply
-the whole vista capable sticker they throw on the computers is total BS vista isn't ment to run on low end pc's such as this if you do buy this computer get it with xp that will save you so so many headaches and possibly a monitor or pc out the window overall thi would be a very very bad machine to purchase
well that is what I see is wrong with that drop me a pm and we can work something out i've been building and selling custom computers for 4 years now if you really want a decent computer that isn't going to crap out on you in 2-3 month I can get you hooked up for 600-800 easy or you could jsut buy my ebay auction

amd's quad core is the equivalent of intels core 2 duo not to mention the AM2 chips are power hogs and put off a **** ton of heat unless you running a after market heatsink it will over heat
3gigs is bad you need stay with even numbers for max performance and don't mix and match the stick sizes thats asking for alot of trouble.
also Tigerdirect should have gone out of business like 3 years ago I stopped buying from them when I ordered a chip 2 video cards and some fans when I got the **** in the pc the only things that worked where the fans
if you must buy a prebuilt I would get a laptop IMO check these out

while this used to be true, at the speeds these machines are running, i defy anyone to tell the difference (by sight) of a few microseconds, which is all a mismatch would boil down to. i had planned on ordering another 2GB with the machine, to take out the 512X2=1G.

sorry you had a bad experience. nothing i have bought from them performed at lower than expected levels.

actually, i have been wanting to put together my next machine, but when i saw the available expansion and future upgrades available with this machine, i figured it would support me for now and when i wanted to upgrade, i could - wouldn't be forced to upgrade anything for quite a while, though. if i bought a laptop the only thing i would want is bleeding edge, because i would never open the case. that equals a 2500-3K machine, too rich for my blood.
keep the opinions coming, i love it.

I would buy it if it included a flat panel......
Im an Intel/Nvidia guy and I prefer building my own although I did just get a dell inspiron 530s through work(b4 the canning) which is the same setup except intel c2d 2.20ghz, 4 gigz 800mhz ram and 8600gt nvidia. $100 :)

Not sure why, but the thread reminded me of this. Intel vs AMD video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgOmMAasqto
I was a AMD fan until the K62 chip went outdated, since then I haven't had very good luck with them. I would check into an Intel C2D if you want a new setup.
If your interested, I just picked up 14 computers last night if you need a cheap replacement. A few of them are spoken for already but I should have a few left. There Dell Gx270 2.4ghz Pentium 4 with Hyper-thread 1 gig of memory and 800mhz FSB, they all have legal copies of XP Pro and I'm not sure of the hard drive size. I leave for vacation Saturday morning so if your interested I could put one together before then.
If not I would check Newegg.com like the other guys said. I've also seen some decent deals in the weekend newspaper ad's.

One thing Ive learned with PC's is you get what you pay for. IMO that PC is iffy. More than likely garbage parts thrown together. Im sure you could drive to MicroCenter and buy everything needed to build a powerful PC for around what you're looking to spend. MC is in Patterson, right off the Parkway and real easy to get to.
And Intel FTW. This isnt from a fanboy side or anything, it's proven. I would stay with a dual core though and not opt for a quad core. You more than likely wont need it. I upgraded from a E6600 to a Q6600 and see no real difference.

No Jim, he's actually telling the truth. I am a big fan of AMD as well, but the Phenom chips were only released by AMD to get a quad core to market ASAP. They really don't perform when compared to similar CPUs from Intel. If you wanna stick with AMD, just grab something with an X2 chip in it.

LOL by no means am I a intel fan boy I still have a S939 Opteron 165 with 7950 GX2 SLI that my GF uses to game on.
Quad cores are used for servers end statement
AMD'S AM2 chips just aren't that good intel got there a$$es whooped by amd with the S939 chips and rebuilt there chips from the ground up with new technology something amd wasn't expecting and there chip was bltch slapped by the C2D
You talk about expanding with that machine and I am telling you forget it that 300watt psu won't let you expand that micro tower won't give you room to use those extra slots or to add a new power supply(chances are that mobo will only work with acer branded PSU's)
seriously pm me and we can talk over aim and I can set you up with a nice system for that price custom built hell I can even show you how to do it so you don't have to have some one els come and fix it.
I was hoping the amd's 4X4 quad cores would pack a punch but they don't intels quad cores are so much better hence why they cost more
and yes you will be able to tell the difference between running 2x2gb or even 2x1gb over 2x1gb+2x512 it is called dual channel
and don't forget about the 49.99 video card you are gettign that will barley run pong
and like tru2chevy said build a rig with a little bit older parts such as the X2 chips or opteron chips from AMD those are still running strong and can handle any game on the market right now and for the same price as that acer will out perform it 2 ta 1 if not better yes you will have to use ddr ram over ddr2 and seeing as a nice set of ddr ram costs nothing now days and it will our perform that 3gb POS lower then store brand ram that is included with the acer **** if your such a AMD hard ball I have a DFI lanparty NF3 mobo sitting in my closet I will sell you or possibly even my s939 rig running DFI lanparty NF4 SLI DR (it is water cooled and custom by all means)
in the end listen to my advice or not keep this in mind you get what you pay for and if it is to good to be true it is!!

Im sure it doesnt. Again my step up from the E6600 to the Q6600 netted me no gains in gaming at all.
I'm running...

Q6600 with a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme cooler
4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 (PC 6400)
850W OCZ GameXStream PSU
2 - 320GB Cuda SATA drives ran in RAID 1

LAWLS quard cores are designed for servers not gaming there isn't a game on the market that takes full advantage of 2 cores atm
and gaming is more about the video card not the number of cores my 3d mark score is 18672 whats yours

What OS is everyone running with Dual/Quad core chips? I run Vista Ultimate 64bit, just wanted to see what everyone else is running.
Were you using the Free trial version of 3Dmark? I wanted to try it out and see how my computer does but I didn't really look into what the differences were in the trial and the full pay version.

now, if i had just posed the question, like i did before, i would've probably gotten the same answers, so i took a different tact. it got me the result i wanted. no, i am not going to buy the quad-core system. it is, in fact, a jump-to-market and does not fully utilize the environment. i am not a hard-core anything, but i would like it to run hard-core games, since i have given up trying to satisfy my games desire with a set-top. i have no knowledge of what games are out there or what machine i need, but kicking things around a little bit and poking (tongue in cheek) fun at intel showed me what i needed to know. computer shopper, which is a fairly new source to me, and probably just an intel advertisement loosely structured as a how-to magazine, showed three different build-ups in their "how to build your own system" labeled june 2008. i take everything i read with a grain of salt, though, but i do see that some of you are running some cutting edge components, a few of which were listed in the buying lists for one or more of the machines they built up for the article. i am not ready to pull the trigger just yet, but when i do it will be with an AMD x2 chip and an SLI type mobo. i have a 250GB hard drive collecting dust, so that will get utilized, as will the DVD-ROM drive i have, just to get started with. i may spring for a light-scribe do-all DVD drive, since they are basically giving them away. things are coming together...

Sounds like you are on the right track, you say X2 do you mean the socket 939(chips that ruled before C2D and still rocks the am2 chips) or the am2 chips?
also if your going SLI and not going to use vista pick up 2 7950GX2 cards off ebay about 100 bucks a pop cheaper then quite a few newer cards but run all the newest games perfectly except the Direct X 10 games. If you want to play DX10 games you need vista and a 8xxx series card or later.

i was thinking am2, but if the 939 chips still out-perform the am2s, then why would i go with the am2? silly wabbit...
and i plan to stay with xp pro, sp3.
except for the 7900 card, this system (http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-AlienWare-Gaming-PC-LIME-GREEN_W0QQitemZ170229262050QQihZ007QQcategoryZ179Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) looks like what i want.

yeah thats what i am talking about
I recommend the 7950GX2's because those cards are basicaly 2 7900's in one card, the 7950 GX2 run 2 GPU's with 512 MB memory per GPU so if you get 2 of them in SLI then that is essentially 4 video cards ,and hella worth it if u can get them for under a 100 bucks a pop.
you ask why 2 well simply because you can hehe plus it will make things run alot better then 1 and I think you mentioned wanting to run sli up top some where
