What are my heads worth?

I have a set of these in my garage assembled but I am going to toss the springs, locks, keepers and retainers as I am going to sell them bare.

They are casting #3964291 closed chamber rectangle port 107cc heads thats came on a L72 1969 427 camaro. They were also available on the 1970corvette and chevelle LS6. They are ported and epoxied for drag racing as they were on my old SS/DA which ran 9.60's I dont see why you couldnt get at least $1200 for them bare. Not sure though. I am going to EBay them but need a good reserve amount but I am not sure.

What's the date on those heads? I'm looking for a pair for my L78 motor. I sold a pair of those heads dated too late for my motor for $900 bare last year.

Most likely K289 or K299 because I think those heads first started showing up in April-May of 69 time frame. Mine were dated J319 and my motor is T1030 so the heads were cast a day after my motor was assembled. Those are probably Nov 69 heads which are good dates because the LS6 motor did not show up until late Dec or early Jan.

Yeah november of 68 dont sound right but they say K288 clear as day, maybe Im just retarded. Anyway, what would be a good reserve price for them do you think, I was tyinking $1200 and see what happens on abay, maybe i'll get lucky

Just take real good pictures of the casting # and date code and you should be able to get around $1000 or more. I've seen single heads for sale complete with valves/springs/etc for around $500 and I've seen complete rebuilt sets sell for $2000 so it's a pretty big range. If yours are really dated 8 and not 9 then it might give you a smaller audience of buyers. Some of the Corvette motors might have been using them in the middle of the 69 model year but that date seems too early.

Just guessing - the L72 might have had different (but similar) heads. Kind of like the -049 and -781 open chamber 454 heads which were pretty much identical except one was used in '73 and the other in '74.

Either way, I wish I had the cash for these things. I have a November '68 built '69 and I'd love to build a good L72 clone. Would you take an LT1 T56 and cash in trade? LOL. :rofl:

The 1969 L72 427 and L78 396 motors used the 840 heads. The 291 heads started showing up late in the 69 model year. I've never seen a 291 head dated earlier than the Apr-May time frame but anything is possible.

imo, you are going about the ebay auction all wrong. set a 10k reserve and start the auction at .99 to see what people are willing to pay for them. also, 10 day auctions are best, since you have the best chance of someone 'happening' by your auction. good luck, those are some serious heads you have.

Some of the guys on the Yenko board said they look like a later date design with that CFO casting in it. They might be 1978 over the counter castings. So they won't compare in value to the original 69-70 dated heads. As for making power, they should work just fine! :mrgreen:
