"SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has ordered Google (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/google_inc/index.html?inline=nyt-org) to turn over to Viacom its records of which users watched which videos on YouTube (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/business/companies/youtube/index.html?inline=nyt-org), the Web’s largest video site by far."

"For every video on YouTube, the judge required Google to turn over to Viacom the login name of every user who had watched it, and the address of their computer, known as an I.P. or Internet protocol address."

They are going to do a raffle with the IP addresses. Winner gets a cookie.

only if they make sheep porn illegal

EDIT: what exactly is viacom suing youtube over? and how will getting EVERY user ever help them? i'm assuming people posted copywritten material. but in most cases, the stuff posted up there is privately taken video of something stupid. what happens if you watched something but didn't know you were doing it illegally? are they going to sue you too? its ridiculous

From the article:

Mr. Fricklas said Viacom would not have direct access to the data, and that its use would be strictly limited by the court order. Viacom would not, for example, chase down users who had illegally posted clips from “The Colbert Report.”

“The information that is produced by Google is going to be limited to outside advisers who can use it solely for the purpose of enforcing our rights against YouTube and Google,” Mr. Fricklas said.

not one in particular, they just didn't want their property (tv shows/movies etc.) posted up as they think it affects DVD sales

Yep. They are so money hungry that they don't want anybody seeing their stuff for free.

Personally, I don't think the people at Viacom know what they are going to get. That list is going to be HUGE, and many of the people on the list will have a dynamic IP address (or a temporary static) or they will have the SAME IP, like students on a college campus.

Bad idea, waste of legal fees, and useless information IMO.

Yea, Google tried to get them to only take the IPs from the video clips that belong to Viacom, but they said they want all of it so they can see how many views the other copywrite protected clips got. They think that YouTube wouldn't be the powerhouse it is without the copywrite protected clips.
