Driving home from work and about 5 min from my house I notice a cop pulls right up behind me. Fine, I know I didn’t do anything wrong. He’s still following me and I figure he's running my plates, fine perfect record never even got a speeding ticket. Only ticket I have ever gotten was for tint, but I had the t-tops off and windows down. My neighborhood has two entrances on the same street about 200 yard apart. Cop takes the first one and I take the second one as I always do because its closer to my house. There r a few cops that live in my neighborhood so I figured it was one of them. Pull onto my street and there is a cop car sitting with his lights on directly across from my driveway on the other side of the street. Also in the distance down the street I see the cop who was following me previously coming down the street towards me. I pull into my driveway just like any another night. Cop #1 , coming down the street, pulls behind my fathers civic in front of my house. I get out the car and proceed to get the ttops out of my trunk and roll the windows up. Both the cops then, all of the sudden, drive away before I can even get my windows up.

I get tailed alot in jersey and im used to it, but never has an officer been sitting outside my house, followed by another one who was tailing me only to both ride away at the same time. I a good guy, always obey the traffic laws, never speed. (I have never had the car over 70!)

Neighbor complaining? Any thoughts?

How loud is your car? I had a neighbor complain and I had a cop hanging round my neighborhood for a while. And then theres always the fact that your driving a camaro... used to get me pulled over all the time.

They could of thought you were another car wich they had a call about. That happend to me and my buddy both of us haev never had tickets and a cop follwed us to my house and he waited down the end of my street for a good 20 min. We found out later that there was a kid in a mustang doing burnouts around town. He was driving his loud 86 GT and i was driving my 89 Lx four banger.

car is a v6 with a cut out that is open halfway because the thing gaveout. really not that lound, way less than any 1S1/lt1 with some sort of exhaust work. I have been driving like that for several months now. And im even coming home at a decent time now(10:15-30) i used to pull in a little after 1am for 2 of those months. there is even a new mustang down the street from me and that car is lound, sounds really nice. Hell actually come full throttle down my street if im out there and working on the car.

and im used to getting talied and pulled over, i really am but when i have an officer sitting outside my house thats alittle different. I almost wanted him to just pull me over because i had done nothing wrong.

that's weird but i wouldn't put it pass them trying there hardest to find a reason to harass you. a cop once followed me for 2 miles until i turned in my drive way and then flipped on the lights, he walks up and i ask why i was pulled over and he said "just doing a standard license check" then took my stuff back to the car. came back a min later and said have a good night and left. and the best one i have ever had was a cop followed me for 9 miles on a 4 lane road at 3am on a Thursday in the right lane in my blazer, pulls me over, i ask why and he said "the speed increased from 50 to 55mph 500ft back and you did not speed up, you were impeding traffic" 4 lane road in the right lane!! he then comes back with a warning for 5 miles under the speed limit! it was 3am on a Thursday the only cars on the road were me and him. sorry for the rant but this is something that makes me very mad, iv also been given a warning for throwing a cigarette out my window when iv never smoked a day in my life let alone in my car.

Just gotta live with it. Or do like me, and run no cats, last time an officer tailed me he had his hand on his nose the entire time. But for the record I plan on having cats welded in.

Its not worth the time. Just be polite whether your right and hes wrong or vice versa. either way a cop has authority. 90% of the time if you be polite and dont act like a punk you can get away with a warning.

lol, that was my first though. I plan on redoing my exhaust in the next paycheck, 2.5" true duals off the headers h-piped to two borla xr-1's, but i think im gona buy another cat and make it legal after tonights little meeting.

on a side note, are cutouts legal if they are closed off (non-electric). Or are they illegal all together? Either on the street or if i pull in to get inspected sith it closed...

Better than average chance that they were looking for someone driving a similar car. Could've been anything from a hit and run accident to a criminal act. Once you got out, you most likely didn't fit the description of the person they were looking for which would explain the abrupt departure.

I agree. If you were coming home after dark they won't be able to see very well.

+eleventybillion. If you make their job easier, it gives them less of a reason to be d-bags about it. Then again you might just catch one having a terrible day.

Cut outs are illegal all together, doesn't matter if they are closed.

I've been harassed by cops before too. I had one follow me for while, him constantly riding my tail to the point that I couldn't see his grill anymore, then he would back off, and then speed back up and tailgate me some more.
Cops profile, its true. While they don't like to admit it, they do it.

+1 i can vouch for this...i pulled into a local school of ours in town and there was a cop in the parking lot...he followed me around the entire school until i parked and he waited...i got out, and he drove away

Please explain.

I know it's illegal to bypass cats but if you are within noise ordinances I don't know how they would be illegal. The whole "non stock exhaust" bill did not pass to the best of my knowledge.

cut outs are legal if they are closed and you cannot open them from inside the car. IIRC.

I understand that that may be the way the law is written but I don't know why they would be that way. I am wondering why the are illegal open; on what grounds?

Found this on another forum; Still looking for something more official.
New Jersey Statutes Annotated Currentness

Title 39. Motor Vehicles and Traffic Regulations
Subtitle 1. Motor Vehicle and Traffic Laws
Chapter 3. Motor Vehicles
Article 3. Equipment
39:3-70. Mufflers

Every motor vehicle having a combustion motor shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.
Now, what is your definition of 'highway' ;)

I remember reading that cut-outs are illegal, I'm just looking for the page. I'll get back to you with the more official results.

ok so its my neighbor or so it would seem...

car wouldnt start today. No idea why. I had to unbolt the ypipe to get to the starter, took it to auto zone and its fine. bolted it back on and she started right up...really confused there. but here the thing i started it back up with the y pipe still off so open headers. Let it idle for a second or two and then shut it down. Not a minute later a cop comes rolling down my street, drives by slow, looking at me while on his radio. then goes to the end of the street and sits there for another min or two. Im tempted to go floor the throttle and see what happens.

on a side note where can i get a cutout plug. My e-valve is broken and would like to close it till i can get another electric one.

I actually had to have mine made. I unbolted my cutout from the car, took it over to a metal shop, and said I need a plate made in this shape. An hour later I returned, and had a 1/4" steel plate that was a perfect fit. Cost me $20 bucks.

Or, you could always but a manual cutout pipe with the 3 wingnuts and just used the plate that comes with it.

Something like:
