well as you many know i sold my 93 z28. and now im back to square one finding a car all over again lol. i was thinking about staying with an f body but i am lookin at some others. can i get your opinions to try and help me with my selection.

here are the few im looking at:
1) 04 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 5 speed
2) 97 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.5 lift on 32s
3) 00 Ram 2500 Lifted on 38s
4) 98 camaro ls1 6 speed t top car

i know most guys will say the 98 but ive never driven one before let alone with a 6 speed. is there a big difference from the newer camaros to the lt1 cars

Each of your choices are drastically differnet.... what do you want out of a vehicle?

unless you want to spend thousands on replacing your motor and other things, dont get the 98. its the 1st and worst year for LS1 Fbodies. It is a ticking time bomb.

+1 theyre the slowest Fbodies and the least efficient, get a 99+

So a sloppy FWD coupe, 2 trucks with lifts, and a sports car.
Whoa...your tastes vary a bit eh?
Id look to get a 01-02 Z28 or SS.

Is this a DD? If so the Tiburon would be the best bet gas wise. .Does it have a warranty?
Dodge Rams are total gas hogs. Unless you are gonna rent your truck out on the weekend to move furniture, forget it!
Jeeps are great vehicles, but do you trust the person that jacked it up? Did they do it right? Did they get all the angles right? Did they upkeep the vehicle properly(fluid changes) or did they beat the pis$ out of it?

97 Vette = 98 Fbody. 98 Vette motors are ok from what i understand

I still thought they were the same and didn't change the rod bolts until '99 in both cars, I could be wrong though.

did the Vettes get different heads on 98? thats one of the weak points of the Fbodies

you have a vette, notice i said F-bodies, not vettes  im not saying all will do that. but its a fact the 98' LS1 fbodies are known for all that crap happening. weak connecting rod bolts, defective oil pumps, piston slap, hydraulic clutch woes, the list goes on and on my friend.

hmm, well if you can, find out who replaced it, and see if they still have the warranty info. If it was a jasper replacement, it should have a 3yr/36k mile warranty on it. I had mine replaced with a Jasper over 3 yrs ago. there was a long list of revisions made. I have had no problems with it other than a broken valve spring about a year ago. And i wouldnt be exxagerating if i said ive had over 100 track passes on it. and double, if not triple, street racing runs. and then the "go from roll" runs.. I was also spraying the 100 shot on it for a summer.

as far as being the slowest of 4th gen fbodies, its really not that much slower. maybe a few tenths. I pulled a 12.97@110 on 17" street tires, lid/catback and full weight and my best time (in sig) which wouldve been 11.7-11.8 @ 115-116 pending i had it tuned and my trans wasnt a pos

Is this Eric the guy i went to high school with who might buy my 355? Its Bill with the '79. I'd say go with the ls1 6 speed. Unless the dodge is a diesel, which I would say either would be a good choice.

I was gonna post the same thing! Cherokees are great, but unless it's been regeared after the lift, prepare for HORRIBLE gas mileage. And, you're going to want to make sure all the work was done by people who know what they're doing. At that kind of lift, the transfer case should have a slip-yoke eliminator, possibly drop transfer case brackets as well to get rid of nasty driveline vibrations.

If you need a DD, get the Camaro or ~gulp~ Tiburon, but I'm sure there are other cars out there that are better on gas and look much better.

1998

1. Had differnet casting heads which had perimeter bolts and valve covers.
2. Ignition coils were mounted to the valve covers one at a time.
3. The water temp gauge actually works.
4. 98's do have an oil life monitor, they just don't tell you anything when its time for a change. You can find it in Auto-Tap
5. WS6s had single outlet exhaust (all others had duals)
6. Steering wheel controls were completely different part with indentations on the buttons, and were better built
7. Only year that Purple, Gold, and Green were available
8. Some very early Trans Ams came with LT1 style headrests
9. Rear hatch release was poorly designed and often caused problems releasing mechanism
10. Early model 98 Monsoon stereos didnt have capability to control 12-disc CD changer
11. 1998-1999 automatic transmission LS1s could be started in 1st gear even with the shifter in 2nd. Starting 2000, if you put the shifter in 2, it would start off in 2, even from a stop.
12. 1998-1999 LS1 cars had a smaller throttle body cam, which caused the throttle to open to WOT faster than 2000+ cars
13. 1998 cars had 28 lb fuel injectors from the factory
14. 1998-2000 cars had a larger cam than the 01-02 cars
15. 1998-1999 cars had more restrictive exhaust manifolds
16. 1998-2000 cars had an LS1 intake with EGR
17. 1998 and some early 1999 cars had blue outside rear view mirrors (TA/Formula only)
18. 1998 only LS1 blocks had a much smaller cylinder sleeve that only tolerated a .005" hone
19. Last year F-body to use the old 15.5 gallon steel fuel tank.
20. Only year LS1 F-body to contain a gascap with a tether long enough to actually hang from the fuel door while open
21. Only year LS1 F-body to not contain the famous GM black box used in the event of an accident to record up to 5 seconds of pre-crash data
22. 1998 only cars had a different PCV system with the PCV valve located above the passenger side valve cover
23. 1998 most cars did not have an idle adjustment screw on the throttle body. Some 98 cars do have the idle throttle stop set screws.
24. 1998 cars have a completely different PCM from 99+ cars
25. A production shortage of F-body cams caused the use of a C5 cam to be installed in F-body LS1s for a very short time
26. 97-98 LS1's used a paper water pump gasket. The only gasket that isn't reuseable
27. SSs did not ALL go to SLP starting in 98. Y2Y was the RPO code that sent them to SLP for additional options
28. SS option did not "include" the Synthetic oil package, it was a SLP only Option

I don't mean to rain on your parade, but I hope you plan on keeping the car stock. Tuning the computer is a pain in the ass and I don't think HP Tuners or EFI live can tune it. I think there's maybe one or two handhelds that can actually tune it. On a high note, you have a temp guage that actually works.

I tuned my 98 LS1 Camaro just fine with our product ;)

23. My 98 Had an idle adjustment screw and have yet to see one without one
26. Although the gaskets are not reusable I've found that the 99+ waterpump gaskets really should be replaced as the stockers suck, the replacement ones are much better and actually can be considered reusable. Anyone who's done a cam swap on a 99+ will know what I'm talking about. BTW I helped do one a couple of weeks ago so I qualify ;)
