2006, manual LT with a lot of options. Front/side airbags, ABS, power seat w/ lumbar support, pioneer stereo, extra chrome package, running boards, roof rails, much nicer grill, alloy wheels. Only 13k miles. I was looking at new with all the incentives that chevy's doing, but this was more optioned and I was demanding SOM in a manual which was proving hard to find in the 08s. Steve found this on ebay, and we went right to the dealer. We talked them down from 13,9 to 11,990 so I'm pretty happy. :D
So far, its awesome. I've gotten 26 mpg around town which is all hilly, cant wait for the first long trip with it. I really didn't like these when you guys suggested it, but after I test drove the first one I was hooked.
EDIT: Obviously there was no tripod involved in the pictures. I took them purely to take pictures, not for a "photo shoot"

VERY nice color. Looks great with the custom grill and stuff. Hard to find with extras since most people will not spend the money if they are going to trade it in soon. Now get some 35% tint all around(20% on the rear) and really set it off.

Its funny you say alternative to SUV. When you're driving it, it makes you feel like you're in an SUV, probably because of the driving position mostly, but its actually very small from the outside, incredibly roomy inside, and handles like my damn camaro! It's got an awesome turning radius, unlike the f-bod, and gives you this strange sense of being in a big car thats really not. Oh yeah, and all state insurance considers it a TRUCK. :banghead: wtf?

probably my biggest gripe about the saturn was the turning radius. i used to joke in my head that they named it saturn because thats the size of the turning radius (bad joke but it made me chuckle in my head). i wonder if cobalt SS suspension parts would fit in it and make it handle a little better. oh, and just about anything handles better than a stock fbody. ;)

Nice pick! I think you put yourself in a tough situation trying to find that exact combination for a vehicle to serve your purposes. Glad you were able to find something that fits and it's even better when you really like the car/truck/suv or whatever it's called. Insurance probably calls it a truck to jack up the rates. What does dmv consider it, a car/wagon I hope to keep registration cheaper than a truck.
i dunno jeff, my trailblazer is considered a "wagon" by dmv and my insurance company, i think they only go by gross vehicle wieght

Nice buy Melissa, the SOM looks sweet on the HHR! I like those cars a lot; they have plenty of room for gear and/or kids, and the gas mileage is a definite bonus. If I could justify buying something new now, that would be at the top of my list.

If i understand it right it is those stupid rules that gave us the suv craze. I think nissan figured it out and gave us the 4 door pathfinder and off the OEs went.

I've had several older 4Runners and some were wagons and some were trucks with DMV. I think it depends on who handles the initial registration. If a dealer does it then it's whatever they pick. If an owner does it then it could be different. But once the vehicle is registered, it can't be changed. Truck registration is more expensive than wagon. I'm surprised insurance categorizes it as a truck though.

Since you're just about a full foot taller, thats probably more for you than me  I just feel like I'm driving a cave.
I rented one of these once and drove it to Maine. I am about 6'5" and I had plenty of headroom, but the windshield was so low that I had to slouch to see the car in front of me, and sitting at a light, my wife had to tell me when the light was green. I felt like I needed one of those old-school stoplight reflectors that you used to see on the dash of cars from the 40s-50s. I'm all for cruising around in a chopped street rod, with all the bad visibility, straight-axle bump steer, bias-ply madness, but not as my daily driver.
Too bad, too, because I think they look neato. The one we rented was silver, and my wife said it looked like a trout. Maybe if I could get one with power seats that adjust lower, it would be okay.

Civic, no, Subie Wagons yes.
Civic hatch back has a lip around the hatch area, so its not a "flat" loading floor.

See how its flat, from the lip of the hatch to the floor?

al, you're crazy...what about minivans?
BigAls87Z28
07-21-2008, 10:12 AM
Crazy or not, Im not the EPA, and thats what the EPA used to think was a truck.
See, if you can get cars like the HHR, PT, and other cars that get good gas milage, and its grouped in with the trucks that get 20 or less, it brings the CAFE of the trucks for that company up.
CAFE is Corperate Average Fuel Economy.
Minivans could also be considerd a truck, but Im not sure how that works as most of them dont have flat loading floors.

yea, and it doesnt bother me, as long as the sticker on the window is close to what the true mpg is.
How do they get around not having to have mpg ratings for trucks?
BigAls87Z28
07-21-2008, 10:49 AM
They dont. MPG ratings should be on all cars and trucks. I think the ONLY cars that dont need one are the ones that are over a certain GVW like the H1 Hummer. Its the same reason why there are zero air bags in an H1...on top of teh fact that it was never designed for them.
The old system was two CAFE sections. Cars and Trucks. If GM had a fleet of 5 door hatchbacks, all with flat loading floors (and Americans didnt have this adverse reaction to hatchbacks andbought them), and all of them got 35mpg or better, GM could advertise that they have the best average fuel economy of any truck line in the world.
Anyway, back to this car. I was just reading up on GMI some member reviews, and a lot of people really liked it.
I hope that on Delt 2, they give it a bit more modern flare while keeping the retro look, increaes quality of materials to match the Cruze, as well as 6spd auto.

...Love the color! ...
how did i know?
i got it, insurance goes up because of full coverage. well, you have to have full if you have a loan on it, right? that is one of the sucky things about cars in NJ, loan means full coverage. once the loan is paid off, you'll be able to drop it down. assuming you keep it, that is...
my wife was kicking and screaming about full coverage on the jeep (we had a deal where we split all expenses down the middle, but we were each responsible for our own insurance). it didn't have a loan, but i wasn't taking any chances with something i just spent 20k on. her old car was an 80s something olds, so she went from liability only to full coverage. i'm wondering if having full on it now is too much, though. it's 7 years old already.

OK, I missed several things I guess....thanks for the update ;)
Anyhows, what's the deal on the ol' Jeepster ?? That finally give up the ghost ?
Dunno....Bab said he didn't like his (rental to/from Carlisle) because he said he wasn't too savvy on the lack of vision in the back or viewing OUT of the thing. Looked pretty roomy for passengers as far as headroom goes (heh...i said headroom  )
Its always nice to have a new ride....I'm not too savvy of payments and added insurance. Hope you enjoys it :) Send me a zip-lock baggie of new car smell ;)
NEVERMIND....I went back further and got the details....
79CamaroDiva
07-23-2008, 09:28 AM
nah, the jeep didn't give up.. still runs but ill be going back to my traveling job at the end of august and needed the fuel mileage. i sat down and figured out what payments translated to what increase in mpg to be worth it, right now this is at around 30 mpg with some traffic related stop and go's, but hopefully once its all highway, itll go up to around 33-34
