Man, this thing is TINY!!!! I parked next to one with my wife's Jeep Liberty and took a pic. Now, the Libby is not a huge vehicle by any stretch, but look at this! Our front bumpers are dead even in the shot.

I was at a party yesterday and a guy there had a red one. People were constantly walking up to it and talking to the guy like he was from Mars and it was his spaceship. He said it gets 44 MPG. A Yaris gets the same. I honestly thought these things would do better, at least get 50.

3cyl geo metros from the mid 90s get 40+ mpg. how is it possible this thing only gets 44, or less?

these things were made to be space efficient, not fuel efficient. they are so severely underpowered that they lose any fuel effieciency you save from the small engine size. the torquey diesel does better for the small car but its only available overseas. guess its not so smart after all huh?..

oh and not to mention they require premium fuel

i went to italy like 7+ years ago and smart cars were HUGE there, funny looking little things but the teens love 'em and put some pretty sick paint on them

the beauty of them is they can be parked perpendicular to a curb where a normal car must be parked parallel. this makes for easier parking as well as space for more cars. oh, and if you live in a city, you can park them bumper to bumper and rent out only one spot in a parking garage. they have their purpose, and that purpose doesn't involve suburbia or highways

no way would i want to be in a crash in that POS!!
so they hit a still object @ 70 mph. kinda impressed by the way the cage held up but thats what it was built to do. but say goodbye to your legs. now crash that thing head on into another vehicle.. say my 2500HD siverado @ 50 mph and what do you think would become of that smart car? /not such a smart car after all.

why waste time building all these type of cars?
they should be building us cars like the ones that were on the JETSONS:lol:

They are quite safe.... I have seen a lot of crash test video's at work. But, there are always limitations on a smaller car.

We had a bunch of them at work a couple years ago when mb was considering selling them.

I drove both a gas and diesel version here and they were a blast to drive.

I hope a turbo diesel one comes here.... but I've seen info for a hybrid one coming.

I'd rock one

Yep, my wife and I were there for our honeymoon 6 years ago and they are ALL over the place! We saw some pretty wild ones on the roads there.

the beauty of them is they can be parked perpendicular to a curb where a normal car must be parked parallel. this makes for easier parking as well as space for more cars. oh, and if you live in a city, you can park them bumper to bumper and rent out only one spot in a parking garage. they have their purpose, and that purpose doesn't involve suburbia or highways

:werd: If I lived in lower Manhattan or some other extremely crowded space where parking is a nightmare, I'd consider it. Otherwise, they make no sense. Imagine driving a Smart car 70mph down the Turnpike next to a tractor trailer!

Only reason why I'd have a SmartCar is if I owned one of those luxury RV's with the mini garage in the back, so I can get around the local area while camped with the RV.

Friend has one sitting in his shop, said it's the biggest P.O.S. he ever worked on. Every time they order parts they get the wrong part, takes multiple tries. Recently the welds broke and muffler fell off. That's what it's currently waiting for. I like the way you change the oil, there isn't a drain plug; you have to siphon it out the dipstick tube?

eh, ordering wrong parts is more human error. welds braking, that sucks. siphoning, thanks for the heads up!

if it looks small there, my friend has a 05 dodge ram 2500 mega cab diesel.....yeah just to put it in size perspective i lined my jeep wrangler bumper to bumper, then put my bros jeep wrangler behind mine and we were only about a foot longer than the ram...imagine a smart car next to that truck.
