3.6-liter V6
zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds regardless of transmission choice
V6 coupe quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds with an auto and 14.7 seconds with a manual, both at 97 mph

the V8-equipped Camaro SS outfitted with the 422-hp 6.2-liter LS3 V8 six-speed manual hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and runs a 13.4-second quarter-mile at 108 mph according to Oppenheiser. Strangely enough, Oppenheiser also claims that the automatic-equipped SS Camaro, which is rated at 400 hp, runs from zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds and through the quarter-mile in 13.3 seconds.

OUCH!

*ducks and hides*

Yeah right? Whats the deal I always thought that if you could drive stick very well youd only be a hair slower than an automatic counterpart.

if you drive a stick very well, you'll be quicker than an automatic counterpart. Autos rob power, manuals are meant to be beaten ;)

I thought I heard where the new 6 speed autos shift very quickly....

jims69camaro
07-23-2008, 02:15 PM
even with firmer/quicker shifts, by design the auto loses power over a manual. it's like a manual with the clutch engaged to some degree all of the time.

GMHTP got a ls1 4th gen into the 12's with less power, I dont see why they wouldnt be able to knock off a high 12 with this car. if all else fails, let j0n drive it

BonzoHansen

We all know it is a tune away from 12s - just like the G8.

The last part of the article caught my attention:

Both versions of the V8 Camaro SS pull a maximum 0.90 g on the skid pad. Four-piston Brembo brakes help stop the Camaro SS in 117 feet.

What this means to you: If Chevrolet's numbers pan out, the Camaro SS will be every bit as fast as the Dodge Challenger SRT8 for a lot less money. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor

.90 g? didn't 4th gens pull .92?

I'm not getting mad yet until A) More tests are done and B) It hits the track driven by every day people.

I'm still disappointed with it's weight. I still hate the interior lol

So far, every 6spd auto car seems to do faster then the manual trans model.
CTS-V set the full sized peformance sedan record with an auto, not manual.

Funny that the 22hp, AFM equiped automatic ran a whole extra 3sec.
I think that thoes numbers are a bit conservative.
G8 GT's weight a little bit more are pulling out the same times with 60hp less.
My bet, Camaro SS is a solid 12 sec car, V6 is a solid high 13 sec car, at worst low 14 sec car.

I wonder what the shift time on the auto is. Must be pretty quick

BigAls87Z28

Yeah, the new 6spd autos use a different system then past autos, kind of halway between a DSG and a traditonal auto.
Plus the 32bit computer that controls the trans is pretty fast.

I still can't believe the car weighs 3900 lbs! There's no reason for a "sports car" to weigh that much. I guess the production headlights weigh a lot more than they thought they would. Does it come with a full keg of beer in the back!

I wonder if those runs were using the "launch control" that was talked about briefly.....

i heard a rumor that the z28 was going to be better than the ss model.....better engine options and such.

is this true or can anyone confirm it? i always thought ss was top of the line fully loaded

BigAls87Z28
07-25-2008, 12:22 AM
Ugh...

Z28 always has been and will continue to be King. Z28 vs SS debates have raged on every site that pays homage to the Camaro.

The way I see it, Z28 was the Trans Am racer, SS was the pretty trim performance street cruiser.
Z28's "290" hp 302 could out run just about every SS save the L78 375hp 396 SS cars
Come 1970, the Trans Am rules allow larger displacement engines, in came the 350 LT-1 making 360hp for Z28 ONLY. Big Blocks were on the way out, 402's were dusted quickly by the true performance Camaro's, the Z28.
Z28 then became the only performance trim, entering IROC racing inthe late 70's to the late 90's.
Only untill SLP came buy and slapped on a hood, intake, wheels and exhaust did the SS emerge above Z28.

5th gen will settle this, and the Z28 will arrive with more power, but also much more money then the SS.
