View Full Version : MPG
Just put gas in my car and I got 27mpg out of my 12 year old, 184k miles LT1. My dads Honda accord gets 29  I wonder if I can beat him on the highway.
Discuss.

My parents seem to deny the fact that my 13 year old heads & cam car gets better gas mileage on the highway then my 4cyl S10.

i avg about 25 mpg (24 city and 28 highway). thats with some pretty spirited and liberal driving there. if im conservative on the highway i can come close to 30 mph. but thats what my beretta and ion are for

The truck is an aerodynamic brick compared to the Camaro, not surprising at all. What kinda RPM does the truck turn at 65 or 70? The camaro in sixth (stock gears) is turning about 1500+/- just sipping fuel and doing it in style.

I get around 19ish with 99% of that around town, and some spirited driving. It's also an auto though, and it's seen as high as 22 with no highway.

I just fill it and don't look at how much it costs and how far it gets me. Its less painful that way. But maybe 10 or 12 mpg city

That wasn't all highway, only about 75%

My old 93 Z28 with the Powerdyne supercharger would get 26-28 mpg on the highway and that was with the automatic. 6 speed cars should be getting 25-30 mpg on the highway easily, unless they are highly modified.

some people are very optimistic with their numbers and rounding. i tend not to believe all of peoples figures when they post. not that anything posted was impossible or untrue, but i noticed it on other forums too that people seem to round up on mpg figures.
filled up > drove 206 miles > fueled up again for a total 7.6 gallons= 206/7.6=27.105
math wins.

I'm anal about that...I keep excel spreadsheets for history of mpg and services ... For example, Camaro tanks have ranged from 18.69 last tank to 22.96 where it was cruising to Chatterbox with no real dicking around.

I also watch my miles to a tank, as I only fill when I absolutely have to. I keep all my reciets and while I'm waiting for a fill I do the quick math and keep tabs on my spending through my credit card since I only use one gas station.

I have a program on my iPod touch that allows me to track MPG and services for multiple vehicles: http://www.catamount.com/iPhoneApps/MPG.html

I write down the miles every time I get gas. I write down the oil changes, the other mods, brake jobs, tires, rotation, etc. A single "fill up" can give you a misreading if they don't top it off all the way. So writing down every mile and every bit of gas will give a good average. I averaged 17.5 mpg over 45K miles on my old 93 Z28 and I'm averaging almost the same with my 2000 SS with 12K miles so far. My daily drive barely gets up to 50 mph for about 2 minutes so it's easy to see why I don't average better. But my highway trips usually pull down 23-25 mpg with the A4.

whats the advantage of documenting your gas mileage? if anything serious comes up, you'll notice it anyway. if i gets lower gas mileage, its probably cause i drove like a moron. i did it a couple times when the car was new to see what the car was about but now its worthless info to me.
if its budgeting your concerned about, then by all means do your documentation. but in the end, you have to drive your car and you know that slowing down will yield better gas mileage. :)

A single "fill up" can give you a misreading if they don't top it off all the way.
I fill up at the same station, same pump about 95% of the time, and they don't top it off at all. I've gotten very consistent results that way.
Cheap 24hr Sunoco station just down Rt. 1 from where I work, so stopping on my way home just after midnight usually means that I can always pull up to the same pump.
