V6's are great.
I saw a best of 34 mpg out of mine.... with some basic mods
The 3.8 L is a VERY strong engine... trust me, of all people who would know, that would be me :)
The only video of a v6 w/ magnaflow I could find is below..... but here are the mods:
Cam, Pacesetter headers, Car Sound cat, LT1 I-Pipe, Magnaflow muffler
So, it will not idle so rough.... and not so deep... but I hope this helps you.

i just put a down payment on that b*tch today....should be picking it up this weekend....and its not COMPLETELY mint..i found the infamous door panel crack on the drivers side but aside from that its straight
does anyone know of a company that makes longtubes for the 3.8? i want to put those and electric cutouts on it

Don't bother with cut outs, the 3.8 does have enough air flow to gain from them and it will sound like complete ****.
There is one company making full length headers, but I think they are rather expensive. Ask Fidget about them, I think he wants to buy them.
If you want to make a lot of gains in mileage and power the easy way, get a good tune and put some gears in it. Little G picked up a whole MPG when he put his 4.10's in. The 3.8 doesn't make much power at low rpm, so being rev'ed up a little bit helps it a ton.

4.10s even though its auto? my friend has cut outs on his 3.4 and it doesnt sound bad at all...so i figured it would just sound even better on a 3.8
and do the v6's have posi and 4 wheel disk as well? i totally forgot to look at the brakes in the back

Posi was an option, I think it would have to have the Y87 option group to get a posi.
4.10's will get that thing moving. Auto or stick doesn't make a difference, it is a performance mod designed to get the car going through the traps in a happy part of the power band so that it is pulling all the way through the finish line. They will be almost exactly the same going down the road as if it was a manual, your overdrive will be a .70 and the 5spd was a .67, that will only be a difference of a few RPM even at speed.

Its kind known that the 3.4's sound a little better that the 3.8s because of the firing order, so i have read and possibly because i like to continue to spread that notion because I'm a little bias8-).
For long tubes go here - got some good reading there

You will lose some low end torque with the cutout and it wont sound horrible, it will just sound like a v6. Either v6 can sound good at idle to ~3k, over that well its an acquired taste.
Here is my 3.4: pacesetters, cat, to cutout

Oh and for the posi rear, if u don't have the y87 package. Go to http://www.contemporarycorvette.com/ or eBay store name "fparts"
I picked up a complete rear from a 96 with a posi and 3.42's with disk brakes for $240, had 60k on it. Also an aluminum drive shaft for an extra $100. Located in Bristol, Pa

He should already have 3.42 gears in an auto 3.8, but if he wants to get some shorter gears (like 4.10s) he's best off either finding someone who's upgrading to an aftermarket rear and buy their rear with gears / posi in it already, or just buying the gears and posi and having a shop install them for him.

Ever hear the phrase go big or go home ? Save your pennies. For not too much more money ive seen high milage (100k) LS1s go for just a thousand more.

3.42's were an option for autos, Y87 package. Manuals got the 3.23's and autos had 3.08's or optional y87 3.42's. even if u had the y87 package in a maunal u still got 3.23's. Just check the door, either way ur right just look for a rear with the higher gears already in it and slap it on there
