It’s one of the biggest — and most hotly debated (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/07/15/the-dark-knight-debate-who-should-be-the-villain-in-batman-3/) — questions in fandom…which actors (and characters) will director Christopher Nolan enlist as a villain for his third “Batman” film? Rumors have abounded since the release of “The Dark Knight,” (http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/306605/moviemain.jhtml) and Nolan has remained fiercely tight-lipped. But now, has one of his main players revealed some of the biggest casting news of the decade?

In an interview with MTV News conducted just hours ago at the Toronto Film Festival, Michael Caine (http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/9107/personmain.jhtml) — there to promote “Is There Anybody There?” — seemed to confirm rumors that the next installment of the “Batman” film franchise will feature two very well-known names playing the roles of The Riddler and the Bumbershoot Bandit, The Penguin. “They’ve already got them in mind,” said Caine, when asked who he’d like to see take up arms against the Caped Crusader. “It’s Johnny Depp (http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/16504/personmain.jhtml) as The Riddler. And The Penguin is Philip Seymour Hoffman (http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/28930/personmain.jhtml). I read it in the paper.”

So Caine is like the rest of us, reading gossip in the tabloids, right? Except for one thing…according to the actor, he confirmed the news through the studio itself.
“When Christopher [Nolan] said we were going to do ‘The Dark Knight’ next, I didn’t what that meant in Batman terms,” related Caine, who plays Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth. “I said, ‘What’s the story?’ and he said The Joker. I said, ‘Oh, s–t! How are you going to top Jack [Nicholson]?’ He said, ‘Well, I’ve cast Heath Ledger. And I went ‘Ha! I couldn’t top Jack, but if anyone could, maybe Heath could.’ And he did.

“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make another one?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘S–t, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]
While rumors of Depp and Hoffman have been hot topics around the upcoming film for quite some time, this is the first instance of one of the film’s stars speaking about the news, as well as Caine citing an albeit unnamed WB executive.
Meanwhile, when asked if he’s spoken to Nolan about the news or the next installment’s script, Caine made mention of Nolan’s vacation, and hinted that, “No. He’s gone. He’ll come back with a script sometime.”

That would be crazy. Depp could probably do it.
Jim Carrey I think played a good Riddler, but he was limited to what he could do to keep the movie PG.
Carrey could do a great older Joker.

Thanks for the clarification, I thought it was legit, although a bit choppy and unprofessional.

its actually supposed to be what the real riddler costume is going to look like.
the poster is a photoshopped dark knight movie poster but is highly likely what the riddler should look like. heres another rendering of what depps character should look like

Only Bane can make a third installment as interesting as the Dark Knight. The Riddler would just be another guy with problems dressed in a suit and lacks hand-to-hand combat. We all saw that already in the Dark Knight. I am sure the movie would be good with the Riddler, but it would only be mediocre in comparison to TDK. Time for some actual fight scenes between Batman and a main villian already.

The same goes for Catwoman. You really couldn't make much of a movie outside of a romance if you just have Catwoman and Batman. Wouldn't you guys think that it would just be another Batman Returns or something similar to the quirky, sense or right and wrong, conflicted romance?

If it were up to me, I'd get Roland Kickinger to play Bane. He is playing the T-800 in Terminator 4: Salvation with Christian Bale and he is/was a body builder. You don't need too much of a great actor for a part like Bane either. Bane is one of the few villains that can fight Batman and is a strategist like him.

Also, Nolan has stated many times over that he doesn't plan to use the Penguin in his movies. But that is always subject to change.

actually if you know your batman comics you would know that catwoman is actually batmans nemesis ( fav line. bats are just flying rodents batman).
with catwoman you get hand to hand combat.

if you also remember the story of the riddler he is a genius. one who thinks he should be famous. batman gets a bad wrap from gotham (dont they all) then the riddler starts sending out riddles to people he's deduced can be batman. afterwards he deduces that batman is bruce wayne.

the riddler/batman saga is never about fist fighting. more about batman dealing with himself as one person rather than having to deal with two identies (to defeat the riddler he must do it as bruce wayne as well proving to himself that batman is bruce and vice versa, i.e doesnt need the suit.)

i think its awesome the riddler will be there. catwoman will provide the fights and riddler will provide the chills.

i havent even seen the dark knight or batman begins. just a fan of old comics

All fan hype. Just because it says it on the internet doesn't mean its true. I don't buy it.

I read the comics and know that about Catwoman, but Batman usually has the upperhand when fighting. Plus, although she could go toe-to-toe with Batman in a fight, She wouldn't have the fighting presence of Bane. Bane looks like he could beat Batman with ease, although he doesn't.

I mean I respect where you're coming from, especially that you are a comic book reader like myself. Talking comics is as cool as talking cars. I just don't think the Riddler can draw a crowd like Bane would. And I think no matter how hard they try, having Catwoman in a movie would just be too much like Batman Returns. I mean I like the characte of Catwoman and everyone knows that Batman has the best rogues gallery, but they need to be very careful which villain they pick if they want the third installment to be even half as good as The Dark Knight was.

I keep telling people they should have saved the Dark Knight for the third installment. With how successful it did in the box office, the thired installment probably won't beat the ticket sales. Of course I am talking from am money making standpoint, which doesn't always determine as to whether its a good movie or not.

They should make a real Dark Knight movie, one that sticks to the comic book.
Bruce Wayne is old, Joker is back, the city is a mess, and Superman is a tool of the US Goverment.

never liked superman. never read him. batman is the only dc series comic i read.

the only problem with bane is that he showed up in the mrfreeze/two face batman in the last movie series.

id actually like to see the mad hatter in a movie if they bring in the catwoman. it would be more pertitent to the story line. then in the fourth movie they can bring in bane and the character story line of nightwing. leaving room for a spinoff series

Freaky how much you and I are on the same wavelength about having the Mad Hatter/ You are one of the few people out there that mentioned him like myself.
