Does anyone else like building them? I was happy today cuz the guy at my local hobby store had a 91 firebird kit =) so I picked that up, can't wait to get back from the Chatterbox to start it! I also got an engine model kit for the corvette 327 chevy small block.

I did use to build them when I was a kid. Usually did Nascar stock cars and military aircraft. Dunno what ever happened to all the ones i did

I'm a huge fan of Revelle/Monogram brand models because they are a good price, and probably one of the higher quality manufacturers that you can pick up anywhere.

Model cars are the about the only cars I can successfully put together! :lol:
Right now I'm putting together a LS1/T56 1st Gen Camaro car, and a 1995 Z28 replica of my own car. I sorta half finished a 4th Gen Camaro LM Race car but when the body work didn't line up I kinda gave up.

and alot like your models my cars came in a box of misc parts some even with instructions waiting to be assembled, just they were made in the 60's. its so much fun being able to make it look how ever you want and knowing you turned every nut and sprayed every drop of paint.

i think i got the last 99 firebird model...im workign on right now. its kinda dumb because it has single exhaust....and small wheels....not exactly a ws6 but im going to try to make it as close to my car as possible.

i bought this model on ebay for like 15 bucks...and i remember i had made one like 7 years ago it was so crappily put together lol.

I have trillions of them sitting in boxes that I never got around to. Maybe some day I'll build some of them. I should probably sell some off though, as I know a lot of them are discontinued and hard to find.

I used to buy several cars and build custom bodies and interiors. I would use an old iron to heat the plastic enough to bend it to meet different body lines. Or better yet, take a built car and put the whole thing in an old toaster oven puch in the body to make it look like it's been in a wreck. Even got a little creative with rust ans scuff paint jobs. Mmmmmmmmmm melting stuff. :rolleyes:

I have a few model cars, I actually have the yellow 91 Firebird sitting in my closet, never got a chance to start it. I like the 1/18th scale cars a little better though.

I noticed on ebay now they are selling 1/18th scale GTA's. They have a TTA, as well as a red or black TPI GTA.

i have been keeping busy by building models. most of them can be seen in my photobucket (http://s10.photobucket.com/albums/a117/jims69camaro/model/). note: each car has its own folder.

i like to make modifications to the cars, like you would in the real world. suspension upgrades, motor upgrades, custom paint and interiors. i don't really spend a lot of time on any one car, but i do take my time to make sure it is something i can be proud of.

i also like to add detail to the cars, like brake lines, spark plug wires, etc. it makes each model a one of a kind.

as you may or may not have found out, wal-mart stopped selling models. it was discussed ad nauseum on scaleautomag.com...

kmart pulled them, then decided since wal-mart was going to stop that they would offer a limited (very limited) assortment of models and supplies. your best bet is to find a local hobby shop (LHS) that you can buy models from. also, eBay has every conceivable car available. there are other online supply sites where you can get the consumables (paint, glue, etc).

i got into it very heavily after i bought a model on a whim several years ago. i recently (last year) completed the car and it's an award winner, so i am hooked. also, the same principals that apply to real world cars apply to models. they get primered, body filled, high build primer, paint and clearcoat. so i am keeping up on the skills i learned both in school and at the body shop where i interned for a while last year. i've completed several versions of camaros in all generations, and am looking forward to completing a very custom second generation camaro that has required a lot of modification. it'll be done soon.

i've also done all six generations of corvette, fords, mopars and even a PT cruiser i picked up online for a song. i have dabbled in all types of custom rods like a '66 lowrider riviera, '53 flip-nose ford pickup, '67 dodge coronet, '71 cuda, to name just a few. i have about 40 unbuilt cars that will last me for some time to come. then i guess i'll be back on eBay...

well, here's the thing... and it's not easy to do, so don't try this at home. in order to try and memorize who some of you are, i kept the pictures from the thread "post yer pic", and i put everyone's name on the pic as the title so i would know who i was memorizing. of course, that doesn't work with the new people or people who didn't post a pic back then.

and the spoons... well, that's an easy one. i wanted to know what candy apple red would look like over different bases, like gold and silver and copper. since the spoons are plastic, like models, and they have complex shapes, ie, they're not flat, then they would be a good representation of what the paint would look like on the car. that, and they're cheap, too. tell me you don't have plastic spoons in your cutlery drawer.

and, yes, i have been busy. i went a little crazy on ebay and i was highly motivated there for a while during the winter last year. it's amazing what you can accomplish when you have as much time on your hands as i do...

When I was a lot younger, like 11 and 12, I loved building models. It gave me my car fix, before I could have a car. I'm 20 now, and i did one recently to look like my '79. I had been looking for a '79 kit for a long time, and my girlfriend got it for me for my birthday. I picked up spray paint to match the interior and the exterior paint, and the stock appearing wheels looked really close to my cragers.

I don't know if they specifically have an 86 Bird, but Michaels and The Rag Shop all sell car models. The Michaels in East Hanover has a mixed bag of classic and modern cars.

Your best bet might be a forums / website devoted to models where you can post a WTB, or keep searching ebay.

sounds like tyler is a few sammiches short of a picnic. it takes 'weeks' to make a model? even on the most detailed of cars, where i've gone off the deep end adding detail, it never took me 'weeks'. and that's with custom paint that came out 'miles deep', too. i guess everyone needs a hobby.

he's probably trying to build value in his models, but a few pictures is all you need to do that, if he's as serious as he says about doing quality work.

I do... its a secret though so shhhhh.... when i was deployed I did them and gave them to kids. So mine are all over the world lol

you can probably find them online. i'd start here (www.modelroundup.com/) first, then expand the search, if needed. you can also find detail stuff here (www.modelcargarage.com/), or just to get an idea of what type of detail you can add to a car. seatbelts are nice, and a full wire/plumb of the engine compartment will keep your models one of a kind.

after dropping like $500 in a few weeks, i'm better off staying away from sites like those. :mrgreen: oh, yeah, and don't forget eBay - lots of people have stores with kits in stock. and you'll probably find that 'hard to find' kit there.

Scale Auto Mag (http://cs.scaleautomag.com/scacs/forums/) forum is a place like this to talk about models. it's also neat to see exactly where the hobby has gone, and to what heights people are raising their models. you can pick up tips and tricks, talk about paint, find out what glue will hold that bond between those two parts you have in your hand, etc. it's a very cool place on the web. and they print a monthly magazine, too.
