I found a 9" rear local. Just wondering if anyone knows places that can clean up the housing and anywhere I can snag parts from.
From an early 70's Mustang. :)
( I need more ford parts for reliability in the Camaro )

Clean up in what sense? HardcoreZ28, RPM Resto and Custom, can media blast and get some paint on it for you if you want and Josh over at JSPerformance can get the parts and do the set up for you.

This rear is rusty and needs SOME sort of cleaning. It's going to need parts, but until I can look at it and do some research, I don't know if I'd get it.
Its ALMOST a perfect fit for my Camaro...but I'd need to get new spring perches welded on (or something in case I get the wild hair to go to some trailing arms ).
If anyone wants to PM me with whatever they can offer, I'd appreciate it....
Again, I'm just researching....

What is there to research? Clean the housing, weld the new perches, install desired gears and differential, order axels with proper bolt pattern, drill ford drums or install aftermarket brakes, Install. All of these services can be done here @ JSP, give us a call to arrange a drop off if you want. Our hours are mon-fri 10-6
Thanks

whats wrong with putting good parts in your 10 bolt?

10 bolt is the stock rear? If so, they have small pinions and just are weak. I think.

his 2nd gen prolly has an 8.5" 10 bolt....far stronger than the 7.5 / 7.625 10 bolt that the 3rd and 4th gens were stuck with.

Ahh ok, yea I was talking about 4th gen rears.

8.5" 10 bolts can also handle a good amount of power with the correct preparation.

Yep. I think Kurt Urban was running 8's on his a few years ago.
Wayne,
See if you can pull some numbers. There are differences in housings (N vs. WAR), pinion supports, bearing sizes, and the like. I think some Ford rears came with tags on them designating R+P ratio, limited slip, and other stuff.

8.5" rears can be built uber-strong. Probably lighter and less HP loss than a 9". Wayne-O, you know you ought to talk to Freddie.

I 'chatted' with Freddie....and he said it wasn't a bad start for the price, since its local.
I just checked and its not available anymore....oh well. Eff it.
Guess if I get one I'll have to pull it from the yard or something.
I wanna get something stronger than a stock 10 bolt...because you can put the same amount of money into a 10 bolt as a 9" and you'll be further along in reliability with the 9"....

since you were planning on building the crap out of the 9 inch anyways...you dont necessarily have to get one from a mustang...plenty of ford passenger cars came with 9inches
just have to take into account the width etc. but you are going to have to modify a 9inch to fit under your chevy no matter what i believe
get your desired set of gears and a detroit locker, or whatever you prefer
easy way to tell a 9inch is looking from the rear of the car if there is no differential cover

I wasn't going to build the crap out of it...
Tru-trac posi unit, 3.40-3.60 gears.....31/33 spline axles....Exploder rear disc brakes w/ parking brake (just get the rotors redrilled to match the 5 on 4 3/4 pattern I'd get the new axles in) and the spring perches.
Nothing SUPER about it....it'd be the same thing I'd do to a 10 bolt....but this would be a 'set it and forget it' type deal....
I might just say eff it and snag one out of a truck and just get the ends cut down and go with the big bearings & 35 spline axles. Then we're talking a few more bucks with the cutting/welding dept.

You can get the same parts for a 10 bolt from moser and it would be just as reliable as a 9" and you already have your rear, unless you just prefer to have a 9".

Don't let explorer barkes be a determining factor. IIRC they have large pistons that can cause bias issues you can't readily solve with a adj valve.

They work in my xploder just fine :)

Jackass. Unless you are putting xploder front calipers in too.

They won't know....the fluid doesn't show taste of C5 or C6 brakes up front ;)
Was reading Woody's post about his rear issues....who knows....I'm more confused now....

If its a stock rear don't pay more then $100 bucks for it, i got my housing for $50 and it came with the center section and axles even though i junked the gears and axles.

Where/how did this come about ? Trying to find a 10 bolt is harder than that, and definitely not as cheap....
