I just got new red dot to replace my scope on a 10/22 and the red dot does not fit on my current rail. I think there are two different kinds right? Help.

grabbed from wiki:

The only difference between the Picatinny rail and the Weaver rail is the size of these slots, although many rail-grabber-mounted accessories can be used on either type of rail. Weaver rails have a slot width of 0.180 in (4.572 mm), but are not necessarily consistent in the spacing of slot centers. The Picatinny locking slot width is 0.206 in (5.232 mm) and the spacing of slot centers is 0.396 in (10.058 mm).[1] Because of this, Weaver devices will fit on Picatinny rails, but Picatinny devices will not always fit on Weaver rails.

ETA: since weaver devices fit pic rails, but not always the other way around it sounds to me like you have a pic optic and a weaver rail.

The rail I have now is too small, and its the stock one. I will look through the cabelas mag tonight and get both perhaps.

Do you have a RUGER 10/22 carbine. I have owned mine now for over 40 years and they still look the same. Do you have a place where you can use it? I have a 10 power adjustable scope and hunted woodchucks on my uncles farm in Freehold until he sold his 570 acre dairy land(a dozen years ago) to land developers, and instead of a house that was built in 1847 on it, there are 1.2 million dollar homes on 2 acre lots. The house was 1/2 mile off the road(the one that leads into Great Adventure 6 Flags)and was the best time I spent summers there as a kid. Fresh air, outdoors, riding a tractor, doing work that kept you fit and eating food that was actually good for you. I think it's called HOMEMADE. Where do you get this stuff anymore?

Yup, its my plinker. Ruger 10/22 with a drauganov stock, bipod and now a nice red dot. Used to have a 15 round clip but NJ is gay and said thats a 4th degree offense nowadays. And I shoot at a public range down in Waretown. Exit 63 ish. You need a valid hunting license though.
