Just wanna rebuild it back to stock w/ one of the summit kits, what does it generally run w/ labor?

No easy answer to the question. Really depends on what condition the block is in and how much work is needed.
How many miles on the engine and the opti + water pump? You never really know how good a good running engine is until you open it up and start really checking things out. If the cylinders need to be bored, not just honed etc. the price will go up ( and the parts in the kit may not be right then?)
First thing you want to do is find a shop that will do the work, and what their price for parts are. Allot of shops don't like dealing with installing customer supplied parts, or even the budget kits.
Only other advice, check those rebuild kits closely. Even though they say for an LT1 doesn't mean all the gaskets are going to be in there, or the right timing chain etc.
in the long rrun it might be cheaper for you to have the shop supply the parts when they do the work.
It happens where a $1,000 rebuild becomes a much more exspensive project.

And then that stock build ends up turning out to be a forged 383.

Why stay stock when you can build it better for around the same cost?
You can take this chance to at least upgrade to a hyperutectic piston. A decent Scat or Eagle rod costs right about the same as refurbishing your stockers and installing new bolts. You can stay with your stock cam if you want to keep the stock exhaust note and convert to a 1.6:1 rocker arm and port the heads for a little better flow.
just my $.02

We do it all here. Like Pampered said it is really difficult to nail down a range until your parts have been inspected then we can put together a parts list.

I would only do something like that for a cruiser. If you're looking for performance you are better off spending a little more, getting the right parts and knowing what you got. With a remanf. you really don't know what you're getting; engine could have been rebuilt a few times leaving you with weak parts and such. Not saying Jasper engines, but we've broken a few of those remain SBC over the years. Slapped a big cam in em and took them out, spun it up and they didn't last too long, some we pulled apart had cranks turned allot, rods that were resized couple times. There can be a big difference between cookie cuter rebuilds and having someone rebuild an engine just for you.
Antz, you’re first post stated "rebuild back to stock” do you mean to stock specs (350 CI), or just meaning stock equivalent parts? If you're planning on a mild heads/cam package too, then forget the rebuild kit, you will be better off selecting the parts individually, such as an upgraded oil pump, maybe timing change, Felpro (.039) or impala head gaskets. And as JS referred, spending a few dollars on upgrading bolts is really a good idea. I've used ARP bolts in all the motors I've built for years. As far as I'm concerned it’s always money well spent. Other then the timing chain these upgrades will cost near the price of what would be in the kit but will be upgrades in helping the engine live and adding a few more HP.

I don't trust jasper as far as I could throw a big block. There used to be a limited sprint car series that ran locally that used Jasper "performance" rebuilt engines. When people opened them up after failures they found "performance" features like different rods, two different heads, broken and rounded off bolts, tapered cyl bores, cast cranks, cracked cams, and many other great "performance" features.

This man speaks the truth! I wanted to do a simple rebuild myself until some unexpected catastrophic failures were discovered so we (Josh) ended up digging deep into a motor and turning it into a beast for just as much as rebuilding a stock motor. I'm not saying you have to go all out (josh will be that devil on your shoulder) but certainly consider letting him put together some ideas for a combination that works for YOU. I know Josh did all that & then some for me and I couldn't be happier. Everyone that has seen my car knows it was put together with some top notch stuff, and I have some performance numbers to back it all up. MPH's don't lie

Jasper Engines :banghead: They suck. My brother bought a 4.3 for his s-10 lasted 1000 miles had to be replaced. My friend got one for his mustang, started knocking before he got back home. Thats when we started to build our own engines. My $.02

Funny, I have one in the shop right now that had different heads on it. Even had different valve sizes!

BTW, I love the retro "hockey stick" stripe on your car. Having a 69 RS/SS myself with the hockey stick warms my heart!

I just realized you had the stripes on a 4th and 3rd gen, cool! Wonder if a white or red hockey stick would look good on my 1992 racecar!
