Wow so they actually thought about putting a manual behind the 5.7... That would made a sick 25th car. 14.3 is definately respectable for a stock gen 1 sbc car...

SLP doesn't make transmissions, it was given to them by GM. The GM ZF 6-speed has been around since 89 in the C4.

GM made two of those cars. One is owned by GM still to this day and the other Im not sure about it. There was an article about this car in GM High-tech perfomance in the Dec 05 issue

well yeah but they had to go to SLP as a formula automatic and then they converted them to the ZF M6

hm, i wonder if many people have swapped those corvette tranny's into their 3rd gens. also is it me, or did it sound a little clunky when they were goign through the gears.

The ZF wasnt made by GM btw.

Yeah, the ZF wasnt that great of a trans compared to the smoother motions and stronger internals of the T-56 and new TR6060.

You mean ZF Friedrichshafen AG isn't a subsidiary of GM??

I'm not saying I disagree but I wonder why GM didn't put the T-56 in the Vette until the C5?

Maybe contract issues, or that they watned to just follow out with the C4 adn start new in the C5, plus if it isnt broke dont fix it, seems to of served the C4 well. Then again, why would GM stick to the T5 if it couldnt handle that much torque, and couldnt be set up to run with a 350.

T-56 didnt exist.
C5 uses a torque tube, and was designed by a different company for the Corvette. C4 uses a standard trans, and the ZF 6spd was the best at the time. At the time, the German ZF 6spd was in every super car from what I remember. For a 20k Camaro Z28 to use it, it was cool.

I dont understand how the T-5 couldnt handle the power of teh L98, but it sat behind the more powerful 305.

What I meant was, when the T-56 became available and GM started using them in 93 why didn't they convert the vette to the T-56?

Cost. If you realy want a good read, find a copy of "All Corvettes Are Red" that talks about the development, death, and rebirth of the C5 program.
C5 was supposed to be out by 93.
Corvette came close to complete death several times durring teh late 80's early 90's.

Well, the cost to recert. the C4 with a T-56 when most if not all money should have kept going towards C5 is probably why.
Remember that GM just cant plunk any engine or trans combo they have in the parts bin. Everything has to go through the Goverment's seal of approval.
