Checked some comments before I got one....too many saying not to get recert'd HDD's. Especially Seagates.
One guy found some on ebay NEW for $60.
YMMV....hope no one loses anything....

Yea, even at only $50, I'll pass on any sort of "used" hard drive. They are so inexpensive that it's not worth cheaping out when buying one.

To those that bought them....make sure you keep backups ;)
And Knipps - Newegg doesn't have that exact drive, but they do have another 500GB / 32mb buffer / SATA 3.0Gb/s for 69.99 and free shipping with a 5yr warranty from Seagate (far better than the 180 day warranty of the refurb on woot)

something you should have been doing all along... a catastrophic failure doesn't happen very often but when it does, and there is no backup, you've got a serious problem.
thankfully, i have an off-site backup. ;) but it is still a pain to download all over again.

woot usually ships 5-7 business days after the day the item is on sale. Sometimes a little longer, sometimes a little shorter. I ordered a digicam for my sister on 11/3 (day after the HDD) and I'll have it tomorrow.

computers have become so reliable that people don't even think that the hard drive can and will go bad. i started out with a dual floppy IBM-pc, so i know all about catastrophic failures and the blue screen of death. and i watched it progress from having to load all of the data via floppy to having dual density floppies (5.25"), then to having a 10MB hdd (yay! you have mail! yay!) with a 5.25" drive and a 3.5" drive... until today where i have unknown number of games and videos and photos and songs and... you get the idea.
it sure has come a long way, but it is still far from infallible.

I give up. How do I get this thing to work? I installed it into the box and plugged it in but its not showing up on my computer. The computer is reading it cause its on the disk drive list in the device manager but I can't open it up unless I can get it to show up on my computer.

If you can access it from your laptop you can format it from your laptop

go into your bios and if you can see it in there you should have the option of formatting it.\
or try this with the hard drive connected.
right click my computer go to manage select disk management that should display the hard drives you have and if the computer is detecting the hard drive it should be listed as a separate drive showing the new space as unallocated space then just right click and select new partition and follow on screen directions if it is not listed there then windows is not detecting the drive and you might have to try formatting it as a slave drive through another computer using a xp install disc if that doesn't work it might be a bad drive
