Was looking over everything I spend money on the other day and was trying to figure out a way not to spend as much. I was looking over my insurance policy to see why it is so expensive and I think its because I have Full Tort. I pay $3500 a year for full coverage on my '04 Ram and liability on my '87 T/A. Then I got a quote from Geico for $1,600 a year with limited Tort and with higher coverage on everything.

Was just wondering what everyone else has. Is Full Tort worth the extra ~2k per year?

What the hell is tort?

Full tort gives you the right to sue for any amount for any injuries in the case of an accident. Limited tor provides limited amounts and limited reasons to sue.

Basically, you are paying extra in the off chance you have an accident and want to sue for millions.

If I could afford it, I'd go with full tort, particularly after the accident we were in 6 weeks ago...

Thanks for the replies. I was just looking at my expenses and I was trying to justify $3500 a year for insurance. I go through an agent and thats what they recommended for coverage but it's still about $150 a month more than what it would cost with limited tort.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I understood the full vs limited tort option.

Just an example, James and I were in an accident 6 weeks ago. I just suffer from whiplash, James has herniated disks. I won't be able to sue for my injury, or I will most likely not get anything from it if I try. James will most likely get money for his injuries, as they are severe and pretty permanent. From what I was told, since we have limited tort, we can really only sue for disfigurement, dismemberment, death, or permanent injury...and there is a lot of proof necessary to determine permanent injury.

But it's really up to you, if you want to spend the extra money on the chance you may need to sue. Or save your money now.

There is an amount built in to every policy that people can be sued for. Just that it would be up to the insurance of the person that hit you how much that would be, I think the minimum in Jersey is either 10 or 20k plus costs.

If you are playing 3500 a year for insurance, regardless of what the policy is, you need to look for new insurance.

Tim, you'd be surprise how much that full-tort option adds to a policy. It would add over $1500/yr to mine here in PA w/State Farm.

I got a quote from Geico built exactly like the one I have now and it was $200-$300 more expensive. The biggest change in price is when I drop the full tort, then it is half of what I pay now.

On my NJM policy it clearly states that by electing the No Limitation on Lawsuit Option, the Bodily Injury portion of my premium will be 70-102% more per vehicle. That's significant money.

I have a "tort-wrench" if that helps! :-)

Ok...lets start out with how old are you and are you married? Males are considered to be "youthful" until they are 29 or married. youthful=high prems.
Also, tort=lawsuit opt.
no limitation means you can pretty much sue for anything. as a result of an accident, u have a bruise on ur pinky; you have the right to sue for that.
limitation- you are limited to what u can use for, death, dismemberment, loss of a fetus, perminent scaring or disfigurement, displaced fracture. pretty much the serious stuff. i work for an insurance co, so i get to discuss this stuff all day :)
i personally have limitation, if i am injured and need med attention as a result of an accident i am covered under my p.i.p(personal injury protection) on my auto policy.

over 25, married, all insurance (house, cars, life) with the same company (yes, there is a discount for that). oh, and hagerty covers Ginny for less than $500 per year...

no accidents/incidents and zero points (license or insurance) with years since my last ticket.
